Cannabis Addiction?

The Independent on Sunday has opted out of its 1997 decriminalize cannabis support campaign on account of new findings on “super strength skunk” that show a correlation between cannabis use and psychosis and schizophrenia. The IoS denounces that today’s availability and strength of the new drug variety is proportionately higher than 10 or 20 years ago. Assuming that cannabis is a causal factor for schizophrenia, Hickman and colleagues argue (Journal Addiction) that there will be an increase in the number of this mental illness if we let prevalence and incidence of cannabis use increase over time.

From a sociological point of view, if we take into account the flow and stock data Hickman’s thought experiment is based on, this increase of schizophrenia in the population groups is the most likely outcome, but here we should not forget the model is also based on assumptions. So far, the medical statement has not been faced yet with a situation where cannabis has been the cause of permanent brain damage or incurable schizophrenia, so it is rather difficult to say whether an increase in prevalence and incidence to new super strength skunk will necessarily mean an increase of incurable mental health problems.

Regarding the study of human flows or social sciences in general it is rather difficult to point out causal links. Association between variables does not necessarily mean some of them must be the cause or have a knock-on effect upon the rest. Other difficulty to pinpoint casual links shows its ugly face when not all the relevant variables are included in the sociological model. There seems to be a correlation between cannabis and the surge of violent crime but so far we have not a relevant study yet on cannabis resin use, as a likely variable operating on its own, and the incidence of violent crime.

Does your body become addicted to alcohol if used every day like other drugs such as nicotine and opiates?

What would be the symptoms of alcohol addiction if so?
For the ones that answered in a smart-ass way, I was legitamately wondering if the addiction was mental or physical. Not all of us know it all.

How come gambling addiction, doesn’t get the same exposure as far as it bad effects as drugs or alcohol?

I know that it has to do w/ that fact that the States and cities make a ton of money on gambling, but i think they should be putting more money into treating the addiction.
It makes no difference that there’s a substance involved in drugs or alcohol. The public doesn’t realize that. The addiction is the part where you get high, whether it’s from alcohol, drugs, or gambling.

Pain Killer Addiction?

Obviously the best way to detox from painkillers is a detox but…If anyone knows a way that one would be able to lessen the withdrawal symptoms or ease this process maybe from experience I would like some imput. Would it make any sense if someone has some Vicoden or Percosets left to maybe take less than they usually would and try to ween off them. I know detoxing from opiates is not a life threatening situation like Alcohol. But I have heard it can be pretty bad. Any suggestions besides detox, and call a doctor. I know these are the obvious solutions but I was wondering if anyone has done this on there own….Thanx

Hike up tax on Alcohol?

Alcohol Concern say that they would like to see a big tax increase on all alcoholic drinks. I totally agree with this, as I know the misery drink can bring, not to mention what it can do to your body, the NHS is falling apart as it is, so if it still exists in 15-20 years time, how’s it going to cope with all of these people who have abused their bodies by constantly over indulging in drink, and indeed, drugs? I think the government should in fact do it this way, take the obscene amounts of tax off of fuel duty, and put the difference onto drink. Cheap drink and long pub opening hours, in todays apparently Irresponsible society, was always going to lead to an alcohol addiction problem. Thats my views on the subject, whats yours?
Just to pick up on a point, I detest New Labour and all that they stand for, but I think that cheap drink should be a thing of the past. And also, if you read the question properly, that is my point about the NHS, gonna be a lot of sick people in the future, wheres the resources coming for that? They can barely cope as it is!

Questions about some the more Obscure Symptoms of ADD/ADHD?

Everyone always told me I acted like I had ADD, but I never really took it seriously or really cared if I did because it didn’t effect my performance in High School too bad. (My parents were good task masters) But now in my second year of college and being on Academic Probation for the 3rd time (Not consecutively, its by the Quarter system) I decided to give it a little more research, I have found that I match most of the typical symptoms almost perfectly, and asking my housemates about it they all agree that it seems like I have ADD. I’m already in the process of setting up an assessment at my student health facility. But what really got me is some of the other more obscure symptoms, which I never thought were related to ADD/ADHD, that some sites mentioned which, some at least, seem to match me as well.

These are some of the ones I found that I never thought were part of ADD or ADHD. My question is: From your experience are these all related to ADD/ADHD, or are other problems to blame. And does medication or counciling help these? And to what degree.

Chronic sense of underachievement, feeling you should be much further along in your life than you are

The health effects of moderate marijuana use and why is it illegal?

I’ve been looking through several medical journals and websites on the health effects on marijuana, but I can only find health effects on marijuana ‘abuse.’ Naturally, no drug is good in excess, legal or illegal and it’s rather bothersome that physicians emphasize the dangers in drug abuse, but don’t advise on the risks if used in moderation. Perhaps in fear of promoting illegal activity or addiction.

But I see it as a drug not unlike alcohol and tobacco (and alcohol was in prohibition long ago), but I just really want to understand why it truly is illegal. Medical or otherwise.

Please, written sources and facts are encouraged.

can drug addiction do this?

im a drug abuser addict.
and i have realized every 3 or more days without drugs or alcohol my nose will bleed, it rarely happens because im usually never sober.
people will say its because i snort a lot and my nose is used to that, but the weird thing is if i go days with just alcohol without snorting anything my nose won’t bleed.
so is it just a withdraw symptom?

i also feel anxious, not like myself at all, and uncomfortable, i crave not being sober more than anything
and i would take drugs or alcohol over anything
but i have to stay clean or im going to fail my drug test and go to jail.

i **** myself im refusing to change
and i’ve let everyone down.
