A question for Joni B and anyone else currently in recovery……..?

They say that when you give up your addiction to alcohol or drugs, you have to be careful not to develop an addiction to something else in place of the first one…(relationships, sex, food, etc)

In the first stages of your recovery, did you find yourself developing an affinity for something to replace the drugs/alcohol?

Thanks for sharing! = )

Yup, and I wish I could get back to it instead of this GD Y!A addiction. I walked at least 8 miles every day. Plus, I did NOT smoke cigarettes while I was using, but I do now. Ugh.

I once had a gambling problem. Not major but still addicting and expensive. It was to the lottery. When I lost my job in a party store right after “9-11″ it began to taper off and eventually I was able to quit on my own. I replaced that with the computer. First it was e-mail and games and then much later this. But I CAN stop when I want to or need to. I guess because I am older I am not as frenetic about doing something as I once was. And, way to go Joni B!!!

Switched my addiction for eating and tv to weightlifting, can’t go for more than a couple of days without hitting the gym.

yep… the first time I quit using drugs I filled my void with alcohol… this time when I went to rehab and quit using both, I doubled the amount of cigarettes I smoked… now that I’m working I have been able to cut back on my cigarettes but now I’m addicted to freaking Y!A… I just naturally have an addictive nature… I find something I like, become addicted to it until I find something else I like and become addicted to that… I also use to be a self mutilater… drugs and cutting have been by far my most dangerous addictions…

I wasn’t necessarily an addict more just dependent but I have found I replaced it with relationships, I feel the need to always be with someone now. It sucks being single and I’ve never been single so this should be the time of my life.
