Thought I'd add to Melissa. I come from an alcoholic family. I can have a drink every now and then and it's no big deal. What I did find out a long time ago was that if I got a little buzzed, I usually drank until I was drunk. For a while in college, it was fun to go out drinking and, yep, I drank way too much. Then, I thought of my family history and vow to never end up like that. I stopped. Now I still have a drink periodically, but I don't get buzzed and I don't drink often. I'm not the only one in my family like this. My dad and most of my uncles were alcoholics. None of my generation is, yet some have a drink once in a while. It's nothing to fear as long as you know the early signs and make yourself stop then. Some of the early signs are: drinking until you are drunk, drinking daily, binge drinking on weekends, feeling like you need a drink, and alcohol messing up your life. Wait until you are legal, and certainly don't live in fear of repeating your mom's mistakes. You won't.

My dad is an alcoholic it basically destroyed my family. I drink but don't abuse it. Essentially you just need to have the will power to avoid going to the extremes.

Some people are more prone to addiction then others. Whether that is because of genes or simply a bad example of the parents is not even important I think.
The most important thing is that you keep your eye on the ball, and realize that alcohol or drugs are never going to be a positive answer to anything; the more you use it, the more you get into trouble - as you have seen.
Good friends can be a great basis for happiness. People you trust and dare to talk openly to are a million times better then alcohol or drugs.
The only person who can tell you 'enough is enough' though is yourself.
Just by being aware that you don't want to fall in your family's trap, I think you won't fall into it. Think and talk about things that really matter in life, stick to a bit of self-restraint and addiction will not even be tempting :-)

Alcoholism can be genetic, but the good news is you have choices to make that can increase your odds. Stay healthy by exercising, getting fit, eating right (real foods - fruits & veggies & protein, not a lot of processed foods) and stay away from alcohol knowing you are pre-disposed to abusing it. Plus, you have a pretty good idea of what it can do to a person, so stay strong and follow your dreams & you will be fine!

If the time ever does come that you do drink, and you feel out of control or overwhelmed, get help quick, becuase the more you put it off , the worse it will be.

Live happy! Try to learn from your mom's mistakes. I'm sure she would love nothing more :)
