Long-acting drugs like Librium or Serax work better than short-acting drugs like valium or tranquilizers.

I would say Librium is the best and has no risk for addiction. Here’s more info
Benzodiazepines. Anti-anxiety drugs known as benzodiazepines inhibit nerve-cell excitability in the brain and are considered to be the treatment of choice. They relieve withdrawal symptoms, help prevent progression to delirium tremens, and reduce the risk for seizures. Long-acting drugs, such as chlordiazepoxide (Libritabs, Librium), oxazepam (Serax), and halazepam (Paxipam) are preferred. They pose less risk for abuse than the shorter-acting drugs, which include diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), and lorazepam (Ativan).

Antabuse is prescribed to help people who want to quit drinking by causing a negative reaction if they drink while they are taking antabuse. You take one pill a day & if you drink it makes you sick.
A newer prescription drug to help you stop drinking is called Campral. It works in the brain to help people quit drinking~ it helps the brain begin working normally again.
I believe Campral is better & has less side effects.
Talk with a doctor about these & find out whats best for you. Its not an easy thing to do & I hope all goes well for you.
Valium works as an anti-anxiety so that helps keeps you calm but won’t work as a treatment for alcoholism. Ativan is another anti-anxiety med too.

The mainline treatment for alcohol withdrawal are the benzodiazepines. Valium, Xanax, Librium, Ativan and Serax are some of the benzos that are used. They are generally given in fairly high doses for the first few days and then gradually tapered off as the alcohol withdrawal syndrome resolves. They control the symptoms and help prevent seizures and withdrawal delirium. The benzos can be physically addictive so they are usually not used long-term. There are some other drugs that recent studies have shown may help reduce cravings and increase sobriety rates in alcohol dependent people after they have gone through the withdrawal. These are mainly anti-convulsants and opioid antagonists (I’ve provided a link for some of these meds). Also antidepressants such as the SSRIs can be helpful in maintaining sobriety.
