my girlfriend was convicted for possession of meth 7 years ago. she did some time in prison and finished a 2 year treatment program for substance abuse. she has been clean and sober now over 6 years and currently works as a residential technician at a treatment facility. she very much wants to go back to school and become a certified counselor specializing in addiction issues. she has turned her life completely around and wants to invest all of her time and knowledge into helping other addicts find recovery. what are the steps she should take to become a drug and alcohol counselor? is there a specific course outline to become one?
thanks in advance.

there is no need for negative comments concerning her past. i just want to be able to help her get into school to pursue what she calls her ‘mission in life’ to help other addicts.

Rehabilitation programs offer professional help to those recovering from their addiction. We at Sober living by the sea offer treatment programs as well as long term Drug & Alcohol Addiction Treatment at the Beach because we know only offering a rehabilitation program will not put the individual back on the mainstream life. These programs are created in such a way that newly sober individuals can thrive in the recovery community of Newport Beach while still living in a structured treatment environment. Since 1986, our long term rehab program has been the preferred destination for men and women. The most effective addiction treatment is provided by the long term care.

Recovering individuals in our long term rehab program are able to integrate back into society with plenty of supervision and support. Clients in our long term rehab program live in gender specific houses and will be drug/alcohol tested every 72 hours. The men and women enjoy the freedom of being able to ride their beach cruiser to participate in the recovery program that our clinical staff has designed for them. Our objective is to give our newly sober individuals a vacation feeling rather than that of a rehabilitation program.

We offer them treatment at our campus in Newport Beach Peninsula. Our location right on the beach in Southern California allows us to offer a wide variety of fun activities for both fitness and also to help our clients build fellowship and learn how to “have fun in sobriety.” Our long term drug rehab program includes fitness activities (such as Yoga, Golfing, 5K run, Basketball etc.), outdoor activities (such as visit to Disneyland, Universal Studios, Sailing-competition, Sand-castle competition etc.) educational and self esteem building activities (like Art museum, Movies, church visit etc.).

We have included following elements in our program: recovery lectures, addiction workshops, one-on-one therapy sessions, group therapy, 12-Step Recovery Meetings, family groups on weekly and monthly basis. We offer T.E.A.C.H. Sober College Program for resuming career and education.

Our website includes real life experiences, daily schedules along with an overview of all our long term treatment programs. There are some guidelines included on our web-site for families about how to lead a dialogue with those addicted. Our web-site has an online form, confidential, for extracting more information and to begin with the assessment process at the initial stage. We recommend you to start early for reaping maximum benefit of our long term rehab and long term drug rehab program.

It seems to be driving a wedge in “our” recovery. He has stated that AA encourages it’s members to end relationships and remain single during recovery. This isn’t an immature relationship by any means…and we share a house and a life together…I have been through a lot with his drinking and don’t want to hinder his recovery in any way, but he goes to his AA meetings at least 3 times a day and is secretive and weird about them…he has shut off any conversation with me about past events or about what we’re gonna do to try and move on. Anybody had any similiar experiences? Care to elaborate?

Now what exactly is alcoholic withdrawal recovery? It\’s a home based treatment method to help alcohol recovering addicts handle their withdrawal symptoms far better and make them go away as quickly as possible. It can help to detox the body. You can find signs and symptoms that could happen any time a person unexpectedly puts a stop to consuming alcohol. Physicians recommend that people should adhere to this kind of treatment method whenever an individual desires to quit drinking.

Alcoholic withdrawal recuperation time is usually determined on which stage the actual withdrawal symptoms are at, but on average within a 3 week period, your life could possibly be on track once again, though there tend to be exceptions in both directions.

Maybe it\’s merely a question of swallowing pain killers to relieve headache. However all those sufferers who\’ve checked into rehab and won\’t be drinking alcohol anymore could need to apply a drug known as disulfiram. Benzodiazepine, carbamazepine, as well as beta blockers would be the common day forms of medicines put to use for alcoholism recovery. Even so, it must be known that drugs alone are not sufficient with regard to helping somebody that is attempting to quit drinking alcohol. Individuals around an alcoholic can also be a major source of strength for anyone wanting to quit.

Alcoholic withdrawal therapy is an imperative step in an alcoholic\’s restoration to come back to a balanced existence. But it\’s so important to first get some medical advice, as we happen to be dealing with a life threatening circumstance, and addiction to alcohol recovery might demand medical support. Lots of recuperation facilities give help groups and consultants to take care of sufferers.

The actual restorative method is distinctive from person to person in an alcoholism withdrawal recovery facility. A few people are \’cured\’ in days whilst other people need weeks, perhaps several weeks, prior to them getting there. The actual administration of the unit will be certainly overseen by individuals that have absolutely no financial profit from the center

Detox is short for alcoholism detoxing. It is a program that\’s utilized in hospitals and alcohol recuperation facilities alike. It refers to quickly quitting alcohol. Despite that, to maintain a tightly held rein on the final results of withdrawal within the individual, they\’re given medicines to control their own bodies reaction to the alcohol no longer being fed into the body. This approach is maintained till the procedure is completed, which is when you do not sense the withdrawal signs and symptoms any more.

I have been researching self-help groups and find a common psychological profile with Alcoholic Anonymous members. Among the many characteristics that I have discovered is a strong desire to seek assistance outside their bodies (brain) with their addiction to alcohol. Most will speak of a god or a spirit that is responsible for their “recovery” form drugs like alcohol. The use of self-will or using positive cognitive energy is discouraged. This finding of entities outside the body contradicts personal problem solving as I know it because to unlearn a behaviour (they say disease) one must go to the source of addictions which is in the body. I am puzzled, can anyone help me understand this AA process?

Hi, greetings everyone.

I have a friend who is currently recovering from an oxycotin addiction. We used to share smoking pot together; now i worry i might be a bad influence for her once she gets out of rehab. How should i get prepared? should i be supportive of her in the sense of helping her stay off everything else thanks to pot or would that trigger her heavier addiction? Please, help, I saw her in such bad shape, i want her to have a total recovery and I know the first thing she will do is to want to smoke with me. What should I do?

I am one of her few friends who does pot only, so if she really wants it she can get it somewhere else, but im concerned. I want to help.
p.s: Weed is the only thing i do. No other drugs nor alcohol. Any advice please?
Thanks a lot.
Z.

Recovery from alcoholism involves a lot more than abstinence. An alcoholic who wishes to remain abstinent from alcohol can make important changes in their lives that will help them to remain sober more easily, and also have a better quality of life.

Simply stopping drinking is attainable, but a painful and miserable existence for many who choose this route. The problem with an alcoholic is eventually not the alcohol; this is a symptom of the problem.

The true issues lie within the alcoholic, and it is these issues that need challenging and healing through continuous ‘work’ by the alcoholic, first in an alcoholism clinic and afterwards through a programme of recovery.

Alcoholism is a disease. It is a progressive, incurable and ultimately fatal illness which ruins the lives of the sufferers and their families and friends. Alcoholics are sick people. They are trapped in a cycle of self abuse which is very hard to stop.

The most successful treatments involve abstinence from alcohol as well as healing through counselling at an alcoholism centre and a daily programme of recovery such as the 12 Steps.

Abstinence plus change
Abstinence (not drinking) alone is a pretty lonely existence. As mentioned above, important changes need to be made in the life and attitude of an alcoholic to help them refrain from drinking.

Through a daily programme such as the programme worked by members of Alcoholics Anonymous, sufferers can live a life that allows them to reach their full potential.

A dry-drunk is an alcoholic that is merely abstinent from drinking. They still display the unfavourable personality traits and characteristics, simply without being under the influence of alcohol.

Denial – why abstinence is not enough

Alcohol addiction, and any addiction for that matter, carries many misconceptions. These misconceptions can keep an alcoholic buried in their life of self-abuse indefinitely. Clients entering an alcoholism clinic will often find themselves challenged on these beliefs, also known as denial.

Denial is something that keeps alcoholics in an ill state of mind and is likely to lead them down the road of drinking again. Some examples of misconceptions and outright lies people tell themselves and others include:

I’m not an alcoholic, yes I have drunk a little too much from time to time but I can stop whenever I want to.

Once I leave an alcoholism centre, I’ll be dried out, so I’ll be fine, I don’t need a recovery programme to follow.

It’s just when I drink scotch that my drinking is a problem. If I drink beer, I don’t get out of hand at all. I just need to stay away from scotch.

I’m here for a break. I’m not like the rest of the people here, they are alcoholics. My drinking just got a bit much so I’m not an alcoholic, I am just in this clinic to get over a bout of depression and I’ll be fine to drink in moderation.

There is no magic cure for alcoholism. If there was, the first thing most alcoholics would do would be to go and get drunk, as they would be able to pick themselves up the next day and carry on with normal life without drinking.

Unfortunately, the disease of alcoholism is always present, and can effectively be treated with a 12 Step Programme.

A 12 Step programme of recovery

Healing inner problems and discomfort takes time and effort. Learning to cope with the everyday aches and pains of life takes practice.

A support structure and programme to assist a sober alcoholic with remaining sober is vital to their recovery and continued abstinence. When an alcoholic works the 12 Step programme, it can arrest and manage their disease indefinitely.

Previously traumatic situations that are a high risk for relapse are far easier for an alcoholic to deal with when they have a support structure offered by 12 Step fellowships and coping mechanisms offered by the 12 Step programme.

A common saying in Alcoholics Anonymous is “abstinence plus change,” as this attitude towards recovery is what the AA programme is all about.

An alcoholism centre can offer an alcoholic the secure foundation they need to remain abstinent and make changes to their life. An alcoholism centre offers an excellent support structure and also introduces alcoholics to the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous; another support structure which will become their lifeline once they reach the end of their treatment.

The support and the programme of recovery that is learnt in an alcoholism centre and used by AA are what differentiate abstinence from abstinence plus change.

I’m 25 just graduated from college and have enjoyed having drinks with friends. She told me recently that she needs to be with a non-drinking partner and has labeled me an alcoholic. I’ve been fine without drinking (no bad behavior or anything like that) but just not drinking is not enough for her, I also have to be working ‘the program’. So I havnt had even a sip of alcohol for a couple of months, I go to AA meetings, have a sponser, but I’m just not seeing it. For the past 4 years I have put my school first, got great grades, and when I did have drinks with my friends I usually (with just a few exceptions) would only have one or two and be done.
I feel that she is just completely obsessed with alcoholism and recovery, she goes to as many as three meetings a day!
Do i really have a problem, or is she just obsessed?

Addiction, whether a person needs an alcohol rehab program or drug treatment, is a disease that needs to be treated and not just tolerated. These addictions are diseases and are very treatable disorders. Of course as in most ways of curing disease, whether it’s physical, mental or emotional, there are different methods for different people as part of their drug addiction recovery.

There are many different methods for drug treatment. Whether a person needs counseling, support groups, long term therapy or a multi-phase, step-down program, there is an answer to help treat this disease as well as an alcohol rehab program if that is what is needed. Like people with physical illnesses, people that are in drug treatment are fighting for their lives and learn that behavioral changes as well as many other treatments are a vital part of staying clean and sober.

What is also very important is cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing which is used to help with understanding and caring for one’s self. Also, whether the person is on medication or not, there has to be a relapse prevention teaching to help prevent this from occurring. Important as all of the above is making sure that the person understands that being around peers that have a positive outlook and are not drug addicts of alcoholics is of incredible importance.

The ultimate goal for everyone is that after drug treatment and once the person is in drug addiction recovery, they remain clean and independent from their former lifestyle. Of course, as with so many other areas in life, understanding what the person is dealing with is the ultimate beginning to the road to recovery. Unfortunately, most people do not realize that if a person is in a drug addiction recovery program or alcohol rehab program, that it is a very serious and complex situation not to be taken lightly. What might have begun as a “rite of passage” for a young adult can turn into a life of hell on earth as they battle just to stay alive.

Finally, when a person is an addict, it is very important for their treatment that they realize they are not alone. Addiction has become a national epidemic and it’s not only the addict’s problem, but society’s problem as well.

Years ago, I used to go to 12-step (SAA) meetings for addiction to Playboy-type videos. I tried a few different groups, and all of them included a lot of garbage that was worse than useless to me. Things like mislead tough love, obvious recovery addiction on the part of some of the leaders of the groups, incorrect attributions and a demand that I find a higher power all drove me away from the program. My sex addiction is a non-issue now, but I’m feeling dependent on alcohol. I may need to get help with my drinking, but I’m not open to many of the views and approaches of 12-step programs and what I’ve seen with therapists (Dr. Drew) that specialize in addiction. Are there alternative approaches, or do I need to shop carefully?

I sought treatment for an addiction to benzodiazapam and ambien and went into an AA-based treatement/recovery program. I know about what AA says about cross addiction, which is why I haven’t touched alcohol for the past five months. The thing is though is that I was always a controlled drinker – I’m in sales and had to entertain clients frequently and would always water down after a drink to maintain composure (meals were the only time I would drink). There are other programs that do not subscribe to total abstinence from all things mind-altering and personally, I’d like to “unload” all of the black/white thinking I’ve picked up from AA because it doesn’t really follow my personal views of living – especially my belief that if you don’t give something attention, it doesn’t manifest into an internal conflict. I cannot stand the hyperfocus on alcohol and feel that all of this is too engrained in my psyche now. Has anyone ever kicked a pill problem and been able to drink in moderation?
P.S. I also feel as if I am a spiritually-evolved person. I didn’t have a problem with that part of the AA program – I do feel solid in my spirituality and also felt like I was able to let go of a lot of things during the intensive in-patient therapy part. If getting healing all of the old childhood scars and growing in spiritual awareness was the problem, it seems I’m much further along than many of my peers in that regard.

Hi. I am really desperate for help. My boyfriend started smoking crack about 3 or 4 years ago (this was before I knew him). He was also a very heavy drinker. He told me this on our first date and told me that he was quitting that lifestyle and wanted to get serious about his life (he used to be a musician). I was stupid enough to believe him and be so naive and continue our relationship (we’ve been together for 2 years now). On our first date I told him that honesty was the most important thing to me. I had no idea…(because I’ve never dated anyone with a drug or alcohol addiction)…that when someone is drunk or high, they lie. They deny they’ve been using. He tells me he’s been clean from crack for almost a year (because he stayed in a recovery home for 4 months and he says he’s been clean ever since he’s moved out). But I have no idea if it’s true (I dont trust him anymore…because I’ve been lied to many times)…I’ve run out of space to write…I’ll continue below…
I know he gets drunk very often. It’s easier to tell when someone’s because of the way they talk. He’s moving back to a Recovery home in 3 weeks again. This gives me hope. My family has no idea. My friends have some idea but its hard because they don’t know how to deal with this either. I’ve tried to break up with him (at least 2 times). But it doesn’t seem to happen. I always feel for him and it’s in my nature to help him. I really really care about this person. I love the person he is when he’s not drunk or high. I’m so stuck! I’m dealing with depression on my own (and have been for almost 10 years…I’m 25 now) I have suicidal thoughts. I’ve been to many doctor’s and I dont see any improvement on myself. I’m going back to see my counsellor at school tomorrow. I feel like this has to do with me a bit…having low self esteem and low expectations. I need help and guidance. Thank you so much for reading through all this. I appreciate any help I can get.

The article goes on to say that Lindsay Lohan trolls L.A.’s 24 hour restaurants, approaches men by telling them she is not wearing any underwear, then invites them back to her place for booze-fueled sex parties!

Should Star magazine be sued for releasing this defamatory story? Everybody knows that Lindsay Lohan takes her recovery from drug and alcohol addiction very seriously and would never have done the things this article claims she did!

An addict’s mind and body is essentially held prisoner by his or her compulsion for drugs, alcohol, gambling, nicotine, sex or other substances and behaviors. Addictions like these, however, are not a hopeless case. As long as the addict has enough will to break the chains of addiction, drug abuse help is always available, including various recovery programs that are in place to help them improve their prospects for a healthy, balanced, and meaningful life through structured and progressive plans for addiction recovery.

12-Step Substance Abuse Recovery Programs

Many addicts turn to 12-Step Substance Abuse Recovery Programs, which essentially operate on a set of principles that serve as a guide for addicts towards ridding themselves of their drug or behavioral addictions. A hallmark of these kinds of programs are meetings, where recovering addicts get the chance to express themselves, listen, and interact with facilitators and fellow addicts without fear of being judged.

* Alcoholics Anonymous Founded in 1935, Alcoholics Anonymous bears the distinction of being the first recovery group. And in its more than 70 years of existence, it has helped millions of alcoholic Americans turn their lives around, and is the model for all 12-Step Recovery Programs. Learn more…

* Cocaine Anonymous This group was founded in 1982 to help to cocaine addicts by providing them with a supportive group of people who have a clear understanding of the problems brought about by cocaine abuse. Learn more…

* Crystal Meth Anonymous A non-profit and self-supporting twelve-step fellowship, Crystal Meth Anonymous aims to help crystal meth addicts kick the habit, remain clean and help other addicts as well. It closely follows the program found in the “Big Book” for Alcoholics Anonymous. Learn more…

* Marijuana Anonymous Individuals who want to stop marijuana use flock to Marijuana Anonymous, which has been helping marijuana abusers of all ages, races, sexual orientations or genders since 1989. Learn more…

* Nar-Anon Most 12-step recovery programs are for addicts. Nar-anon, however, is a 12-step program designed for friends and family members of drug addicts. This group is meant to work closely with Narcotics Anonymous. Learn more…

* Narcotics Anonymous Narcotics Anonymous is the second-largest 12-step organization. It is modeled on Alcoholics Anonymous, focusing on men and women for whom drugs had become a major problem. Learn more…

* Nicotine Anonymous A group of Alcoholics Anonymous member who wish to stop smoking established this group in 1982. Anyone who desires to quit smoking and live nicotine free are welcome to join the group, which focuses on finding a higher power, turning over self-will, and admitting powerlessness over nicotine.

I am just wondering… sometimes when life gets stressful and overwhelming, I am tempted to retreat to some of my past addictions (alcohol, anorexia, cutting) and occasionally do so. I make the excuse that it’s okay because I am having a relapse and therefore can’t help it. But deep inside I know that I could use self-discipline and healthy coping methods to resist it if I tried.. so is this really a “relapse” or am I just missing that part of my life that is gone? How long after recovery before these urges and slip-ups stop? For me, I consider that I’ve been recovered for about 3 years. Insight or advice?

Janice Haskins, the creator of Stepping Stone – Substance Abuse Recovery cards,
Has been writing for over thirty years. She attended Indiana University Northwest and in the spring of 1989, she placed third in the George N. Thomas Essay writing Contest. She is the author of several poems that, for the past ten years, have been published by the National Library of Poetry. Her poetry has been published into the following Anthologies “Into the Unknown, Days Gone By, In Dappled Sunlight, and Recollections of Yesterday.” She was awarded the “Editor’s Choice” award for Outstanding Achievement in Poetry in 1996.

The Sparrowgrass Poetry Society published several of her poems in their 1997 summer edition of “Poetic Voices of America.” The Famous Poet’s Society honored her as a “Famous Poet” for 1998. In August of 1999, her poem “Self Love”, was chosen by the Executive Committee of the Famous Poets Society, Board of Directors, to be presented at
their Fifth Annual Poetry Convention. This same Poet’s Society honored her a “Famous Poet” in 2002. They honored her Famous Poet again for her poem “Undetected” and several of her poems have been published in their anthology, “Famous Poems of The Twentieth Century.” She received both the “Shakespeare Trophy of Excellence and the 2003 Poet of The Year medallion.” The International Society of Poets nominated her “Poet of the Year” in 2004. The International Library of Poetry named her one of the best Poet’s of the year for the years 2004, 2005, and 2006. She is currently a member of (Eugene B. Redmond’s) EBR’S Writer’s Group in East Saint Louis, Illinois.

Janice is also a recovering substance abuser, who has been substance free for the past twelve years. She abused drugs and alcohol for twenty-four years of her life. It is only by the Grace of GOD, that she has overcome her addictions. She knows that this is a day-by-day, step-by-step process. She also knows that it is by her faith and by the favor of the Lord that she is alive today. She was led to create these cards for any and every single person who has been affected in any way, by any kind of abusive substance. She knows first hand how great it feels to receive encouragement and hope in the form of a card given by someone who truly cares. As these cards have helped her, she knows that they will be of help to others. Today she spends her time writing, speaking and sharing with others, the dangers of substance abuse.
