Let’s face it. People seeking addiction counseling and addiction treatment, whether for compulsive shopping, cocaine, alcohol abuse, marijuana, smoking or gambling, are too often judged by society. But like other ineffective coping attempts, addictions do not come out of thin air. In fact, addictions are attempts at emotional regulation or, more specifically, avoidance of feeling. This is the sad truth. Addicted individuals don’t need criticism, they need support.
Dependency is also viewed negatively in society often seen as neediness. But dependency is only part of addiction; it’s possible to depend on a drug but not be addicted to it. In fact, dependency on other human beings to regulate our emotions is not only normal, it is vital to survival as children. When people are abused, neglected or deprived due to failed parental care or lack of empathic attunement, the unconscious mind seeks alternative strategies to cope with feelings.

I’m really worried about my mother. It used to be that she’s the one constantly worrying about me, but things have changed and now I feel like I’m the mother and she’s the child. The thing is, ever since my dad moved out of the house, she just kept on turning to alcohol. She would drink a lot and eat little, and she seems not to care anymore about what happens to her. When she got fired from her job, I guess that’s when the gravity of her actions finally hit her. When I talked to her, it did seem as if she really wants to get her life back on track. I just want to know how I am going to be able to find an addiction treatment center for her.
The reason why I’m asking is because I have just recently decided that I want to become an addiction counselor. I have lost some friends to alcohol and I know how tough it is to deal with situations like that. I really want to help out those who are suffering from their substance addiction, as well as their loved ones who are affected as well.
My husband needs help. Lately, he has been turning to alcohol more and more. It used to be that he only drank on occassions when he’s so troubled, but now he drinks everyday. Last night, we had a talk, and he broke down and told me that he wanted to change already. I want to be able to find an addiction treatment center for him as soon as possible. Suggestions, please.
