Alcohol addiction is one of the serious social problems of the society. It affects not only the addict but all his family members. In this article you will find some methods which can help in getting rid of this serious addiction. Keep on reading this article if you or your loved one is somehow related to this serious problem.

If somebody has decided to go under a rehabilitation program then first thing he should do is to find information about this topic. The patient should know enough about withdrawal symptoms which appear as the treatment starts. Every heavy drinker who tries to get rid of addiction has to face withdrawal symptoms. All the symptoms which are seen in an addict after abstinence from alcohol are together known as Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome.

Let’s talk about common symptoms which are faced by the patient. Headache, gastrointestinal disturbances, vomiting, nausea, mood swings, nervousness, jitters and anxiety are the major symptoms which are seen in the patient who is going under rehabilitation program. Some patients also feel elevated body temperature and pounding heart while they are trying to get rid of addiction. In later stages the patient can face insufficient sleep, loss of appetite, bad dreams, sweaty skin, and uncontrolled movements of small muscles and dilation of the pupils.

All the above symptoms I have stated above are minor ones some patients have some serious problems like seizures, delirium, hallucinations and confusion. Person who wants to get rid of alcohol addiction should not try it at home because he will not be able to face the signs and symptoms without proper medical care and support.

Have you ever heard about alcohol rehab centers? According to recent studies and research these centers have helped lot of people in getting rid of addiction problem. It does not matter to which type of drug person is addicted because the basic steps used in the rehabilitation centers are practically the same. The first essential step is detoxification process. In this step the person goes under special procedures which wash out harmful toxins from the body. The detoxification process is followed by some counseling which can boost the patient’s emotional and mental status.

If you are looking for an alcohol rehab center then there are many things which should be considered. You should always go through the website of the center. The website can give you information about many things. You should always go through the reviews and testimonials provided by the website. You should never opt for a rehab center which do not have experienced and professional staff. Always opt for a program which offers 24 hours emergency care and professional support. You should be very careful while opting a rehab program because the effectiveness of the treatment depends on the quality of the treatment.

If you are suffering from an alcohol addiction, you are not alone. Alcoholism is a word that sometimes has negative social connotations, and just because a person drinks alcohol does not mean that they are an alcoholic. The amount of alcohol consumed varies greatly from person to person that develops alcoholism, and is also affected by genetic predisposition, and social and emotional health. Alcohol by definition is a disease that results from a persistent use of alcohol despite negative personal, emotional, financial, and professional consequences. Heavy alcohol use accompanied by dependence and symptoms of withdrawal, and the inability to recognize that every bad thing has been related to an alcohol addiction. The sometimes uncontrollable urge to drink leads to constant preoccupation with the drug.

According to numerous online sources, the most common substance of abuse resulting in dependence in patients presenting for treatment is alcohol. Overcoming an addiction to anything can be difficult, but there is help and hope available to people who want to stop drinking and get their lives back on track. The mind is more powerful than any drug, and to discover this is to truly be on the road to recovery. Addicts have to make a conscious choice to get and stay sober, one day at a time, and learn how to control the cravings. It’s not something that can be done alone, which is why there are treatment facilities all over the country, most of which are privately owned substance abuse recovery centers. The philosophy of AA or Alcoholics Anonymous has proven to be helpful to many alcoholics in their fight against alcohol addiction, and the program is often used as an adjunct treatment with other therapies, such as in an inpatient setting. AA also encourages communication with a sponsor to help guide the addict through the recovery process, and provide support while working through the program.

Learn more about effects of alcohol as well as alcohol facts and the truth about alcohol addiction. Some online literature discusses at length what drives alcohol addiction, detailing the effects of alcohol and describes some of the research being done to correct drinking problems. Alcohol continues to be the most greatly abused substance despite the wide-spread negative consequences. Even after public outbursts, divorce, loss of employment, revocation of driving privileges, and loss of life and limb, alcoholics continue to drink because it is so highly addicted in people who are predisposed to this disease. If you or someone you know is giving part of their life to alcohol, encourage them to get help. It may take a series of bad events to get the point across, and for many alcoholics, this is what it takes to see their illness in a different light.

You may suspect that someone has a drinking problem, but how do you know it’s time for treatment?

Millions of people drink alcohol. Some drink rarely, and for others it’s part of daily life. Some people are alcoholics, and some are just ‘normal’ drinkers. Unfortunately, drinking has become so much a part of our culture it’s sometimes hard to figure out which is which. When is someone’s drinking normal, and when do they actually need alcohol rehab or some other form of treatment? Here’s how you can tell the difference.

A person who does not have a problem with alcohol addiction or dependence can stop whenever they want, and will do so if their drinking is causing problems of any sort. These could be physical problems, including hangovers that interfere with life’s responsibilities or enjoyment, or emotional problems like family disagreements. An alcoholic, although he may promise to quit, and even want to, can’t stop – regardless of the consequences.

An alcoholic depends on alcohol for emotional support. When times get tough, the alcoholic heads for the bar, or liquor cabinet.

An alcoholic doesn’t like to participate in activities that don’t involve drinking. Consequently, they may start to neglect their responsibilities to family, work and friends.

They will also spend more time on drinking than on other things. If they’re not drinking, they’re stocking up, planning or arranging when they’re going to drink next, or recovering from a hangover. Alcohol occupies much of their life and their thoughts. As the situation worsens, so does their neglect.

Generally, someone who has a problem with alcohol addiction or dependence drinks frequently. Sometimes every day. They may not drink a lot – they might only have a few beers – but you’d have a rough time getting them to stop.

When they try to stop drinking, they get uncomfortable, may be in pain, and may even get ill. They’re going through withdrawal. This could include shaking or sweating, having trouble sleeping, being irritable and anxious, and feeling nauseous. Withdrawal from alcohol can be extremely dangerous – even worse than drugs.

Someone who is frequently and obviously drunk has a problem that no one, other than a person in the same condition, could miss. But some people can drink excessively and not really seem affected by it to the point of having slurred speech and the other symptoms we’re familiar with. That doesn’t mean their less drunk, or less impaired, their body just reacts differently.

If that’s the case, keep an eye out for the above signs. If you notice them, get help through an alcohol and drug addiction treatment center. Without help, the situation will only worsen.

The more success is discovered using hypnosis for alcohol addiction the more sense it makes to engage in the process. Many addicts have the dual challenge of battling physical urges and well as recognizing and dealing with mental triggers. Hypnosis can help just about any addict learn how to deal with these issues on a whole different level.

During an addiction the addict puts into play a host of emotional responses that leads them right back to the bottle. What hypnosis can do is help the brain in effect rewire itself in order to find new ways of dealing with emotional issues. Hypnosis can also create relief for the very significant and real physical withdrawal symptoms and subsequent cravings.

The more open minded an addict is the more they will benefit from using hypnosis for alcohol addiction. If the addict is willing to try this rather impressively successful method of treatment on several occasions, there is a good probability that it will work and it will work well. Allowing the mind to realize that there are other options to drinking helps the mind go straight to making different decisions when it is stressed.

There are many addicts who have had only on session of hypnosis for alcohol addiction and have been able to stay sober. There are others who have had to go through weekly sessions in order to maintain their sobriety.

No matter how often, the most important aspect of using hypnosis for alcohol addiction is realizing that it is a helpful tool rather than some sort of magic potion. You will still have to put in the effort to uncover your reasons for drinking. Hypnosis is just one way to make that process easier and more enlightened.

Hypnosis has been proven to help many addicts of all kinds break free from their addictions. There are certified hypnotherapists that can help an addict reach a new level of self awareness and self control.

If you or someone you know is suffering from alcoholism addiction the best gift you can give yourself and your family is the gift of recovery. Recovery from this condition can be a long hard process, but it can be done especially with the support of friends and family. If you or someone you know would be interested in recovering from this, here is a guide to the different methods you can try, some helpful hints and how to move on to leading a successful, happy life.

The first method one could try for recovery is finding support in a recovery program. This could include attending special meetings that are specifically for alcoholics or talking to a counselor or psychologist. There are many benefits that come from attending meetings. The first benefit is that you will be around others that are struggling with the same issue and will understand you better. You will also be around whom have a similar goal. One of the hardest parts of recovery is separating yourself from the negative influences you once had in your life. Finding others that you can talk to and who will understand your frustration can greatly benefit you. You can also speak to someone about getting a sponsor which is someone who has been in the program for a long period of time. They can be a great source of comfort.

For more drastic results one could turn to a detoxification program or rehabilitation program. You would have to check yourself in as you go through withdrawals. This is recommended for those who dealing with major symptoms and need extra help. These programs have special staff and nurses on hand to help you as you go through withdrawals. This may take a while and for some these symptoms can be scary.

No matter what route you take, you will be grateful you started yourself on a road to recovery and can look forward to a healthier future.

Question by Dan: I’m a moderately heavy drinker, am I in danger of death due to alcohol withdrawal?
So on average I’ll have between 4-11 drinks in a normal 4-7 hour session between 4-5 days per week, 99% of the time its just beer. I’ve recently decided to pretty much stop for a while, which is no big deal for me. I’ve been able to stop whenever I’ve wanted in the past, however sometimes subconciously I feel that I have a pretty slightly moderate dependance, not necessarily a physical addiction but more or so less psychological.

I’ve experienced small to very moderately low symptoms of withdrawal, mainly the normal hangover symptoms the first day (headache, dehydration, sensitivity to certain sounds or lights), and later on some slight agitation (just having a short fuse or less patience with some things) as well as some moderate emotionally negative feelings here and there with some slight anxiety.

Basically I just wanted to clarify how intense my symptoms were, I do know they are there but it seems that they definitely aren’t as heavy as some other peoples in more extreme situations. At what point would I know if my body is in danger of possible death due to alcohol withdrawal?

As always, judgmental ignorance, opinionated attacks, and/or useless remarks will be ignored. Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Joseph
Dude withdrawing should be no problem for you. I have a friend who have drank an 18 pack a night for the last 15 years and he completely cold turkey ed and now he doesn’t drink.. Death is not something to worry about when quitting.. Sure at times you’ll feel like shit but still man you’ll save alot of money and will actually enjoy being sober.

Article by Sarah Michaels

There is no one reason why people become addicts. However, science is making great inroads in understanding some of the reasons that certain people are prone to the type of addictive actions that eventually lead them into a rehab center. Genetic, environmental factors and mental health conditions are just a few of the risk factors that lead some people into a spiral of addiction that forces them to end up in drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Genetics: People who have a family member with a drug or alcohol problem are at a high risk for addictive behavior themselves. The results of one study suggested that children or siblings of drug and alcohol abusers were two to four times more likely to have a drug or alcohol addiction than someone with a history of addiction in their immediate family. The types of unhappy childhood environments that come from families with addiction is one factor, but so are issues with the “wiring of the brain” that appear to be handed down from generation to generation.

Age: People who begin abusing drugs or alcohol at a younger age are more likely to have a serious problem that will necessitate going to a drug rehab program. Also, because adolescents are also going through major changes with their bodies and their brains, drug treatment can be complicated and in some cases more difficult than with an adult.

Types of drugs used: Researchers say that drugs that are injected into the veins such as heroin are incredibly addictive because they trigger an “instant” high by getting directly into the blood stream. This is opposed to drugs that are smoked or ingested, which have to work their way through the nervous system before giving the user a high. Because of this, drugs that provide instant gratification can be more difficult to treat while the patient is in drug rehab, including having more violent withdrawal symptoms.

Most women know that drinking excessively isn’t good for an unborn child, and many have heard of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) – the worst consequence of alcohol addiction in pregnant mothers. But few women are aware of the fact that even one drink a week can harm their unborn child.

FAS affects thousands of children every year. Untreatable birth defects that lead to poor memory, attention problems, impulsive behavior, and other mental and emotional issues make these children difficult to educate and raise. Their lives often turn into a maelstrom of drug and alcohol addiction, substance-related crime, and violence. Statistically, kids with FAS are more likely to die violent deaths than others. Other than miscarriage or dying in the womb, FAS is the worst consequence of drinking while pregnant.

But even mothers who have one drink a week are risking problems for their child. A study called Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Predicts Continued Deficits in Offspring Size at 14 Years of Age found that 14-year-old children of mothers who had just one drink per week during pregnancy are smaller (including smaller head size – which can indicate smaller brains) than children of mothers who didn’t drink at all.

Another study, Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and Childhood Behavior at Age 6 to 7, found that children of mothers who had one drink a week were more likely to act like little juvenile delinquents.

In fact, there are many similar studies and they all show the same thing: children of mothers who drink, even one drink a week, are much more likely than other children to have problems with attention and memory, hyperactivity, impulsive behavior, social skills, communication skills, mood swings, and so on – all the problems that have resulted in so many children being put on drugs just to be able to get through a day at school. These kids, like the FAS kids, are also more prone to drug and alcohol addiction and abuse.

Why does so little alcohol cause such disastrous effects? While alcohol is dangerous for adults, mature bodies process alcohol very quickly. Unless the person is drinking continuously, the alcohol is flushed out of their system quickly.

When you’re pregnant, the alcohol passes through your body to the placenta – the baby’s food supply – very quickly and the baby can’t get rid of it for quite a while. It stays in their little body for a long time, effecting their development every step of the way. So, the occasional drink for mom can be the equivalent of continuous drinking for baby. This can create the same effect as alcohol addiction and dependency does in an adult.

Recent research showed that one night of drinking can impair an adult’s thinking for a month. Multiply that by many times, along with the physical deterioration, and you’ll have an idea of what it does to an unborn baby.

If you’re planning on becoming pregnant, now is the time to quit drinking – even if you only have one drink a week. Since we don’t often know we’re pregnant until we’re two or three months along, waiting until you know is a mistake.

If you have a problem with alcohol addiction or have trouble stopping, get into an alcohol rehab program that will help you quit drinking and help make sure you don’t relapse while you’re pregnant.

However, if you have a problem with alcohol addiction, dependency or abuse and are already pregnant, make sure you consult with your doctor and a good drug and alcohol rehab specialist before you quit drinking. The withdrawal process can be very stressful physically, and may also damage the baby.

Let’s face it, life is hard enough. Whether you have a serious alcohol addiction problem that requires alcohol rehab or just have to quit having the occasional social drink, do it. Give your child every possible chance to have a good life.

Alcoholism is a powerful craving for alcohol which often results in the compulsive consumption of alcohol. The cause of this craving is heavily debated, but the most popular beliefs are that it is a chemical or nutrional imbalance, a genetic predisposition, a neurological effect caused by runaway learning mechanisms or an inability to curb one’s own desire for enjoyment.

Alcoholism is often a controversial subject. Some believe it to be a biological disease, but the inability to tie it to a specific biological causation makes this is a political debate and not a medical one.

Alcohol addiction has been identified as having various components.

* Psychological addiction involves those things which convince a person that they gain benefit from the use of the substance. For instance, if they feel that they are more socially adept while drunk or that it allows them to better handle stress, then they might feel that any problems caused were worth the benefits.

* Physical addiction (a.k.a., dependence) involves the physical adaptation of a person’s biological systems to the continued presence of alcohol in their system. The person’s systems become more comfortable when they have the “normal” level of alcohol, and higher doses are required to maintain an equivalent effect. A decrease in the level of alcohol causes reverse imbalances resulting in withdrawal symptoms, which for alcohol can be deadly.

* Neurochemical addiction involves the hijacking of existing learning mechanisms in order to convince the system that an addictive behavior is good for it, despite all evidence to the contrary. Endorphin is the body’s way of telling the mind that a behavior is good for it. We release endorphin into the blood stream during sex, exercise and consumption of some foods for instance, and this is responsible for “runner’s high” and “afterglow”. This is more than just a good feeling, it is teaching our brain that these are the behaviors that it should repeat.

It has been demonstrated in various clinical tests that mammals with more active endorphin systems are more prone to alcohol addiction. This is because alcohol triggers the release of endorphins into our system, and we learn that alcohol drinking is a behavior that we should repeat. This effect is also visible in the use of opiates, and in various risk-taking behaviors such as skydiving and gambling.

The social problems arising from alcohol abuse often include loss of employment, financial problems, marital conflict and divorce, convictions for crimes such as drunk driving or public disorder, loss of accommodation, and loss of respect from others who may see the problem as self-inflicted and easily avoided.

Alcohol dependence affects not only the addicted but can profoundly impact the family members around them. Children of alcohol dependents can be affected even after they are grown; the behaviors commonly exhibited by such children are collectively known as Adult Children of Alcoholics Syndrome.

Although there is no specific diagnosis for alcoholism, there have been many efforts at diagnostic approaches to alcohol dependence, abuse and complications associated with chronic alcohol consumption.

Several tools may be used to determine if you are an alcoholic.

* The CAGE questionnaire can be used to screen patients quickly in a doctor’s office.

* Another screening questionnaire is the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT).

* The Alcohol Dependence Data Questionnaire is another sensitive diagnostic test.

* Although there is no blood test specific for alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence (alcoholism), prolonged heavy alcohol consumption may lead to several abnormalities in the body.

Alcohol addiction is a treatable disease that can end in the death of innocent people. If you are an alcoholic or are a family member of an alcoholic, contact your physician for the most current treatments available.

Alcohol addiction is a problem generally identified far too late, nevertheless, as soon as its symtoms are known you must try to get alcohol treatment from an alcohol rehabilitation center immediately, and the same for other drug abuse symptoms in that it can be treated.

Alcohol addiction is among the most widespread and draining psychiatric problems among the total population, and is completely curable if you have a good amount of one-on-one treatment by professionals within the dependancy field that have learned to locate, and heal the hidden issues that are making you use. Alcohol addiction is perhaps one of the most common and yet most debilitating addictions. Because alcohol is legal and widely available, it’s easy for alcoholics to deny a problem, claiming to use alcohol as a social vehicle or as a relaxant at night after a hard day’s work. Alcohol addiction or abuse effects the stability of a home, the family’s unity, mental well being, physical health and entire family dynamic. And therefore, family members character will ultimately unravel until the drug or alcohol addict gets the help and support they will need.

Alcohol addiction can affect anyone and doesn’t discriminate depending on age, background or situations. It robs a person of their health, friends and family, money, career, associates, as well as their everyday life, and be characterized by increased tolerance, causing the abuser to drink larger amounts to get the same desired effect. This menace could be a difficult task be hard to recognize. It bring on neurological concerns including forgetfulness and dementia. Alcohol addiction also has an effect on glutamate and GABA, which effect how communications are transmitted between nerve cells inside the brain. More alcohol that could be dranked, the more a person’s brain begins to imagine that the opiod level is common.

Alcohol addiction could also result in significant health issues primarily brain damage, cancer, heart disease, and liver diseases, and be considered a hazardous preoccupation resulting in serious psychological along with actual physical problems. It increase risk for codependency and economic dependence on men, constraining women from leaving abusive relationships, creating a vicious circle that is difficult to escape.Given that alcohol addiction is regarded as a disease, alcoholics are unable to truly be held liable for the wreckage they leave at their jobs, in their personal lives plus the lifestyles men or women close to them.

Treatment method should make the person observe their conduct effects them and folks in their lives. Treatment method compliance may be the most significant cause of relapses for all chronic illnesses, including asthma, diabetes, hypertension, and addiction. Effective drug rehabilitation that helps you achieve realistic and long lasting sobriety, is the most important thing you’ll ever do. Some battles are too important to leave unfought. Treatment of drug and alcohol dependancy may also come by means of alternative drugs to support the withdrawal elements of drug abuse.

Most rehabilitation facilities includes introduction to 12-step principles, daily group and individual therapy and life skills classes. Rehabilitation services look to preserve growth made in detoxification, while working towards establishing a firm ground upon which future long-term recovery is to be built. Before embarking on a treatment program, you need to look for an alcohol addiction rehab that is an authority on your problem, staffed by experts provides you with the intervention which are needed. Alcohol addiction rehabilitation could be the final option for an individual who will be dealing with alcohol addiction. When meetings and support groups are unsuccessful, sometimes the most effective help someone can get is from a treatment facility.

Question by simone: will i go through alcohol withdrawal?
for four possibly five years now i have been drinking a 24 ounce can of malt liquore (steel reserve) everynight when i get home. i want to stop drinking becasue i feel like it is a bad habit, and plus i want to quite smoking because whenever i drink i smoke. so i figure i need to stop them both. i know that i have a mental addiction, do you think i will have physical alcohol withdrawal? if so how long do you think it will last?

Best answer:

Answer by Anna
You may not go through full blown withdrawl because of the amount of liquor you consume daily. if you start feeling symptoms of withdrawl more than 3 days after your last drink, go to the hospital immediately.

AA support groups help too and you can always reach them at www.aa.org or you can go to http://www.aa.org/lang/en/meeting_finder.cfm?origpage=29 for support.

Question by Sfsfsdf Fwgefgv: If you have a addiction to alcohol, and go to jail, do they HAVE to give you alcohol?
Alcohol withdrawals can put you into a seizure that can kill you, so if your arrested and put into jail and tell them that you have a high chance of dying from alcohol withdrawals, do they HAVE to give you alcohol?

This can go for some other drugs to, I know benzo withdrawal can kill you, but either way, wouldnt they get sued for millions of dollars and shut down if they refused someone a drug and they died because they refused to give them it?

Best answer:

Answer by Theda Bara
No, they just let you dry out. If you get into difficulty you go into the infirmary. You will be given
sedatives and allowed to dry out.
People can sue, but they don’t win unless the person was not given medical treatment.
Detox centers do not give you drugs or alcohol you know.

But, a person has to be very careful while choosing a rehab center, not all rehabs provide effective treatment for the recovery of a person. Selecting any world class alcohol rehab center is the best way to get all the necessary treatment needed for the complete rehabilitation from the alcohol addiction. Moreover, addiction to alcohol is not as fierce or harmful as the drug addiction and it can be cured comparatively at a short period of time. Nowadays, very few people die because of the effects of alcohol addiction as good treatment is available in almost every country.

As told earlier, choosing the appropriate alcohol addiction treatment center is very important. This is because of the withdrawal effects of alcohol addiction. Although the alcohol addiction withdrawal effects are not as intense as that of the drug addiction; there are several severe effects which can even cause death if not taken well care of. Some of the alcohol treatment centers florida have gained huge popularity because of the care after care process. The alcohol or drug addicted people often run away from the ordinary rehab centers and get back to their addiction life when they cannot bear the pain of the withdrawal effects anymore. At such situation, they need lot of care and comfort; the medical staffs of the well known rehab centers provide immense care and mental support and help the addicted patients to get rid of the addiction habit and get back to the normal life.

The best help for the alcohol abuse treatment is only possible with the help of the alcoholism treatment centers florida as these alcohol treatment centers florida are some of the best choices to make regarding alcohol abuse treatment center.

Addiction is a commonly faced problem of the present generation. That is because the young generation of the present day is being assaulted by the troubles of a hip hop culture and lifestyle. The centers for addiction rehab in Montana help patients who are trying to come out of the clutches of addiction. Various governments of different states waste millions of dollars so that trafficking of drugs and illegal substances of abuse is prevented. Survey has shown that a lot of treatment alternatives are available for curing drug as well as alcohol abuse. More than 10% of teenagers have experienced drugs at some time or the other.

The techniques are used for patients who want to get rid of their addiction. A lot of rehab facilities are coming up around the world. Generally, most of the programs that cater to addiction rehab in Montana are private in nature, whereas there are others that are non profit in nature or are government based. The addiction rehabilitation and treatment facilities that are government run are low cost and hence easy to afford. Unlike private organizations, the treatment that is run out here is offered at a lower rate.

The effects of alcohol addiction destroy the life of a person and their career options and relationships. The person is generally lonely as well as destroyed further. Any type of addiction requires the right kind of treatment and this helps them successfully deliver the results which are required appropriately for catering to their needs. The treatments help the addict lead a life of sobriety. The appropriate as well as necessary path that is taken to ensure the success of the treatment is available at addiction rehabs in Montana.

The method of addiction treatment is a little identical to the traditional methods which are generally based on the 12 step programs of Alcoholics Anonymous. However newer methodologies are replacing traditional techniques which have shortcomings. These techniques result in a higher success rate and are also more palatable as against the confrontational and guilt admission techniques of the 12 step programs.

Generally, the processes of transformation help the patients change their degrading lifestyle according to the nature of their family and careers. There is a reported success rate of about 70% and while choosing the processes, one needs to be mindful of the services that are offered by the facility. The processes are not quick and easy to avail of and some are more convenient to avail of than the rest. The methods combine scientific processes along with traditional solutions. The steps to sobriety are often tough as it is preceded by withdrawal symptoms, although a lot of therapists have succeeded in treating or curing patients without their facing extremely unbearable withdrawal symptoms.

I often hear people talk of the difficulties of quitting things such as soda, caffeine, certain foods, cigarettes, alcohol, etc etc.

From a personal stand point, I’ve never been able to fully comprehend addiction, because I’ve never felt it. There’s nothing that I have stopped consuming that I felt I absolutely needed again. Many people I know are this way with things as simple as soda and caffeinated beverages. They’ll often complain of how they can’t function without their morning coffee, or can’t get through the afternoon without their soda, or start going through withdrawals when they go a day without a soda or something.

It’s never been an issue to me.. often, I’ll buy a 24 case of mountain dew and go through it in a week. Then the next week I’ll buy something else, because I’ll get tired of it, so I’ll get something like a gatorade or water. I never have a desiring urge to continue eating or drinking something.

I’m assuming that’s completely normal.

Why do some people get addicted so easily, and some don’t face any type of addiction to anything?
I figured it was mostly psychologically related. Are there any studies that show what psychological influence subconsciously has an effect on someone’s addiction or lack of?
See, when I hear things like that, it just sort of boggles my mind. There’s no way I can comprehend something like “a case of dew a week will break you.”
Lady – I think that may have something to do with it. I feel my brain chemistry and psychological blueprints don’t allow me to to feel what addiction is like.

For example, if I drink a Mountain Dew, I enjoy the taste of it, just as I enjoy the taste of a gatorade, a glass of water, or anything else I enjoy. They just don’t (pardon my slang) grab me by the balls and control my life.

Of course alcohol is not a drug. If it was we wouldn’t be allowed to drink it in most of the western world, as long as we are regarded as old enough by local law. It’s legal, and socially acceptable.

But of course alcohol is a drug, and alcoholism is just as much a form of drug addiction, as serious as being addicted to marijuana, cocaine, heroin, or any other “Non-legal” drug. The problem is that so many people regard alcohol as just another beverage.

One definition of drug addiction is an uncontrollable desire for a substance that the person feels they have to have in order to function, even live.

We can define alcoholism in the same way. When someone is an alcoholic, i.e. adicted to alcohol, they can’t live without it. They just cannot see their life without the presence of alcohol. It is a fixture in their life, and has to be there. Alcoholics often do not see it as a problem, and will usually not give it up without a real fight. The plain fact is that they are just as much a drug addict as the dopeheads and cokeheads.

An alcoholic can’t live without the “high” that it gives them. Just to re-inforce the point the Food and Drug Administration has in fact classified alcohol as a drug. So by any sensible person’s definition an alcoholic is a drug addict.

It’s not all doom and gloom, alcoholics can get help for their addiction, just as addicts to other substances can. I’m sure we have all heard of Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.). These are groups of people in pretty much every town, usually run by ex alcoholics, who meets at regular intervals, and work on “The twelve steps to recovery.” This is a hard road, and it is accepted that an alcoholic is always an alcoholic and always “recovering.”

So called “regular” drug addicts, when coming off their substance of choice, suffer from withdrawal symptoms. This is also true of alcoholics. The various effects of both alcoholism and drug addiction are far reaching, and can linger for years. So we can see the connection between the two.

When an alcoholic reaches a point when they want help for their condition it is most important for them to realise that they are in fact in the grip of a powerful drug addiction. This realisation is often the main key to recovery.

Just as heroin addiction is a serious disease, so is alcoholism. We may not think that alcohol addiction is a serious as heroin addiction, but in fact it is just as debilitating, and can affect you just as badly, often in ways you couldn’t imagine. Try Googling “Effects of Alcoholism” and see what you come up with, you may be surprised, and probably not a little frightened.

If you believe that you may be addicted to alcohol and you want to do something about it then get help quickly. The sooner the better. It is everyone’s right to have a good long, healthy life. It’s not too late. As always, the best time to start your recovery is right now.

Many people don’t really consider alcohol a drug. After all, it is legal to drink – as long as you’re of age. But the real truth is that alcoholism is a form of drug addiction just as serious and harmful as addiction to other drugs. Because alcohol is legal to drink, many people just think of alcohol as another beverage.

Drug addiction is defined as an uncontrollable craving for a substance that a person feels they must have in order to live. Alcoholism is defined in much the same way. When a person has an addiction to alcohol, they can’t see their life without drinks in it. The presence of alcohol has become a “given” and they are not willing to give that crutch up without a fight. The cold harsh reality is that people with alcoholism are drug addicts plain and simple.

Alcoholism causes a person to think that they cannot live without the “buzz” that alcohol gives them. Alcohol has been classified as a drug by the Food and Drug Administration, so a person with alcoholism does suffer from a drug addiction.

The good news is that there is help for people who are suffering. Perhaps the most well-known organization that helps people with alcoholism is Alcoholics Anonymous. This is a private group that meets several times a week and centers on twelve steps of recovery. Making it through the twelve steps leads to a full recovery from alcohol addiction although it is still a struggle to stay sober.

People who have a drug addiction to substances such as heroin and cocaine suffer from withdrawal symptoms. People with alcoholism do too. The far-reaching effects of drug addiction and alcoholism can stay with a person for years making it obvious that the similarities between the two evident.

When you decide to seek out help for your alcoholism, it’s important that you acknowledge the fact that you are also suffering from an addiction to a powerful drug. Once you face that fact, you can really start on the road to recovery.

Alcoholism is a serious disease just as drug addiction is. While you may not think that being addicted to alcohol is as serious as being addicted to heroin, it can still affect your body in ways you never even thought of. Do a little research and pay attention to what the experts say about your problem.

If you think you have an addiction to the drug that causes alcoholism – alcohol – it’s important that you seek help as soon as you can. You deserve to be healthy and live a long, clean life. The time to start is now.

You should not treat the problem of alcohol addiciton with levity. In other words, there should nto be any form of compromise when trying to solve the problme. This same approach is usually used by mnay alcohol treatment centers out there. They don’t treat the problem with kid’s gloves. Hence, you won’t find any bottle of liquor at there center.

If this approach is not used, the patient will have relapse. Thus, you may have to visit an alcohol treatment center to get help.

Many of the alcohol treatment centers out there often focus their attention on helping alcohol addicts to stop drinking alcohol. While some of these centers try to unravel this problem in a sudden form, others choose to do it subtly. But they have the same goal and it is not only to get the patient off the problem but also to help him or her stay off alcohol permanently. Anything short of this is futility.

One is surprised at the speed at which many individuals are visiting alcohol treatment centers these days. It occurs everywhere in the country and also the world. The rich and the broke; the erudite and illiterate; young and old can be found in a treatment center, trying to find assistance. This is worrisome and it reveals that many people are merely making use of alcohol to handle issues or challenges confronting them rather than facing the problems of life positively. If you or a family member is grappling with alcohol, this information is written for you.

Furthermore, you start to wonder at how sincere a few alcohol addicts are at quitting when you read or hear news of inmates trying to sneak in bottles of alcohol into the alcohol treatment center. It indicates that these individuals are actually not earnest about overcoming their urge for alcohol. However, you and I should also realize that these people are not in control of their lives. It is alcohol that’s in control.

Alcohol seems to be a good companion to a lot of persons who are just into drinking but little do they understand that it’s a callous foe when you are not in control of it. The way out of this difficulty is to get assistance from the specialists who understand what will be done to handle the case and set you free. The one place you can find these consultants is in an alcohol treatment center.

Many individuals are afraid of checking into an alcohol rehab center. The explanation is because of the firm environment existing in the rehab. This makes the alcohol addicts to attempt coping with their drinking problems without seeking for any help. While this is a good suggestion, you must be aware that you may not be in a position to handle lots of things on your own. This is why you need help and must check into a good and dependable treatment center.

Alcoholism isn’t limited to the matured alone. Like I mentioned before, even the young ones don’t seem to be safe. They soon become captivated with alcohol or binges once they try it out. They do not seem to be able to regulate it. Luckily, there are a number of alcohol treatment centers out there that will manage young adults with alcohol addiction difficulty.

Once you or a family member comes out of an alcohol treatment center, it’s highly recommended that you make amends and resolve to change your way of life. This to evade relapse and being sent to the center again. This is the best means to keep off alcohol for the rest of your life. It’s highly recommended to stay away from people and parties that will lure you into drinking. A lot of alcohol addicts have remained sober after coming out of the center. You can do it too.

I’m only 19 years old and started smoking when I was 14. I quit for about a year after turning 15, when I decided I wanted to get healthy and lose weight and get in shape. I did successfully then, until I was 16 when two of my best friends were killed in a car accident. Until then, I have smoked to the present.

I see a love/hate relationship when it comes to nicotine and myself. I like the feeling it gives me, hence the reason I smoke.

There are so many associations/triggers. Here’s an inconclusive list going from the strongest trigger to the least:
-First of the morning
-Sex
-Alcohol
-Parties/Social Functions
-Anger/Arguments
-Frustration
-Anxiety
-Boredom
-Relaxation
-It goes on, but like I said, its inconclusive.

I have made a plan this time and have written it down on note cards. The note cards are labeled “Reasons I Smoke”, “Reasons to Quit”, “Trigger List”, “How to Deal With Triggers/Withdrawal,” and “After Withdrawal.”

I’m quitting cold turkey, because I believe that using nicotine replacement products just shifts addiction.

Anyone else got other supportive tips?

Internet addiction -defined as “excessive gaming, sexual pre-occupations, and email/text messaging” – is becoming so common that at least one psychiatrist says it merits inclusion in psychiatry’s official handbook of mental illness, the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.”

Dr. Jerald Block of the Oregon Health and Science University is the latest voice pushing for this inclusion, noting that tech junkies display genuinely debilitating behavior, including drug-like cravings, withdrawal, and a constant need for more and better gear – just like a substance addict might exhibit.”

Alcohol abuse effects can be far-reaching and devastating. The effects of alcohol abuse not only have consequences for the drinker but those around her or him as well. Alcohol abuse effects can be both psychological and physical. Alcohol consumption causes changes in behavior. The physical effects of alcohol abuse can be experienced with as little as one or two drinks. Impaired judgment and coordination needed to operate a car safely may result in the drinker having an accident.

Alcoholism is an illness where alcoholic beverage consumption is at a level that interferes with physical or mental health, and negatively impacts social, family or occupational responsibilities. Alcohol abusers are drinkers that may drink excessively at various times with resulting immediate alcohol abuse effects at the time of excess alcohol consumption.

The immediate physical effects of alcohol abuse can be experienced as soon as ten minutes after drinking begins. With continued alcohol consumption on that occasion, the immediate effects of alcohol abuse worsen and become more serious.

Here are five of the immediate physical alcohol abuse effects:

1. Inhibitions Become Reduced – at a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05, changes in a person’s behavior begins to be noticable. Alcohol abuse effects and reduced inhibitions can put a person at higher risk for actions they would otherwise not participate in, such as sexual activity, continued drinking or illegal drug use.

2. Loss of Muscle Control – at the level of 0.10, slurred speech will likely be evident. Impaired judgement and poor coordination are physical effects of alcohol abuse that can lead to falls and accidents.

3. Memory Loss and/or Blackouts – since alcohol depresses the brain’s control mechanisms, as blood alcohol levels increase, periods of time and certain situations and events may not be remembered afterward.

4. Stupor – at a blood alcohol concentration of 0.40, a person can hardly function, acting seriously dazed and confused.

5. Coma – at a blood alcohol level of 0.50, a person is at risk for coma, which can be life-threatening. And at this level or higher, respiratory paralysis and death become very much a possibility.

Other alcohol abuse effects that are short-term include nausea, hangovers, headaches and fatigue. The longer a person abuses alcohol over time, the higher the chances of other alcohol abuse effects being experienced and alcohol dependency developing. The most severe form of alcoholism is ‘alcohol dependency’. Physical alcohol dependence is characterized by withdrawal symptoms when alcohol consumption is interrupted, by tolerance to the effects of alcohol abuse and by the presence of alcohol-related illnesses.

Malnutrition can develop from a reduced appetite plus inadequate absorption of nutrients in the intestinal tract and from consuming ‘empty’ calories in alcohol. Calories from alcohol are called ‘empty’ calories since alcohol contains no beneficial nutrients, vitamins or minerals.

And with continued alcohol consumption and abuse over years, many of the body organs will be affected. Alcohol is especially harmful to the liver since the liver does most of the work of breaking down alcohol. Alcohol destroys liver cells, and it destroys the ability of liver cells to regenerate. This condition leads to progressive imflammatory injury to the liver and eventually can result in cirrhosis of the liver.

Additional long term alcohol abuse effects include damage to the brain, high blood pressure, heart muscle damage, nerve damage, pancreatitis, bleeding in the esophagus, erectile dysfunction in men, fetal alcohol syndrome in the offspring of alcoholic women, insomnia, depression and increased cancer risks.

If you or someone you know may have problems with alcohol and you’d like to learn more about alcoholism and perhaps seek help, there are proven resources available. It is never too late to begin recovery from alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse effects.
