I often hear people talk of the difficulties of quitting things such as soda, caffeine, certain foods, cigarettes, alcohol, etc etc.
From a personal stand point, I’ve never been able to fully comprehend addiction, because I’ve never felt it. There’s nothing that I have stopped consuming that I felt I absolutely needed again. Many people I know are this way with things as simple as soda and caffeinated beverages. They’ll often complain of how they can’t function without their morning coffee, or can’t get through the afternoon without their soda, or start going through withdrawals when they go a day without a soda or something.
It’s never been an issue to me.. often, I’ll buy a 24 case of mountain dew and go through it in a week. Then the next week I’ll buy something else, because I’ll get tired of it, so I’ll get something like a gatorade or water. I never have a desiring urge to continue eating or drinking something.

Of course alcohol is not a drug. If it was we wouldn’t be allowed to drink it in most of the western world, as long as we are regarded as old enough by local law. It’s legal, and socially acceptable.
But of course alcohol is a drug, and alcoholism is just as much a form of drug addiction, as serious as being addicted to marijuana, cocaine, heroin, or any other “Non-legal” drug. The problem is that so many people regard alcohol as just another beverage.

Many people don’t really consider alcohol a drug. After all, it is legal to drink – as long as you’re of age. But the real truth is that alcoholism is a form of drug addiction just as serious and harmful as addiction to other drugs. Because alcohol is legal to drink, many people just think of alcohol as another beverage.
Drug addiction is defined as an uncontrollable craving for a substance that a person feels they must have in order to live. Alcoholism is defined in much the same way. When a person has an addiction to alcohol, they can’t see their life without drinks in it. The presence of alcohol has become a “given” and they are not willing to give that crutch up without a fight. The cold harsh reality is that people with alcoholism are drug addicts plain and simple.

One is surprised at the speed at which many individuals are visiting alcohol treatment centers these days. It occurs everywhere in the country and also the world. The rich and the broke; the erudite and illiterate; young and old can be found in a treatment center, trying to find assistance. This is worrisome and it reveals that many people are merely making use of alcohol to handle issues or challenges confronting them rather than facing the problems of life positively. If you or a family member is grappling with alcohol, this information is written for you.
Furthermore, you start to wonder at how sincere a few alcohol addicts are at quitting when you read or hear news of inmates trying to sneak in bottles of alcohol into the alcohol treatment center. It indicates that these individuals are actually not earnest about overcoming their urge for alcohol. However, you and I should also realize that these people are not in control of their lives. It is alcohol that’s in control.

I’m only 19 years old and started smoking when I was 14. I quit for about a year after turning 15, when I decided I wanted to get healthy and lose weight and get in shape. I did successfully then, until I was 16 when two of my best friends were killed in a car accident. Until then, I have smoked to the present.
I see a love/hate relationship when it comes to nicotine and myself. I like the feeling it gives me, hence the reason I smoke.
