Article by Tommi Corine

Alcohol addiction is one of the serious social problems of the society. It affects not only the addict but all his family members. In this article you will find some methods which can help in getting rid of this serious addiction. Keep on reading this article if you or your loved one is somehow related to this serious problem.

If somebody has decided to go under a rehabilitation program then first thing he should do is to find information about this topic. The patient should know enough about withdrawal symptoms which appear as the treatment starts. Every heavy drinker who tries to get rid of addiction has to face withdrawal symptoms. All the symptoms which are seen in an addict after abstinence from alcohol are together known as Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome.

Let’s talk about common symptoms which are faced by the patient. Headache, gastrointestinal disturbances, vomiting, nausea, mood swings, nervousness, jitters and anxiety are the major symptoms which are seen in the patient who is going under rehabilitation program. Some patients also feel elevated body temperature and pounding heart while they are trying to get rid of addiction. In later stages the patient can face insufficient sleep, loss of appetite, bad dreams, sweaty skin, and uncontrolled movements of small muscles and dilation of the pupils.

All the above symptoms I have stated above are minor ones some patients have some serious problems like seizures, delirium, hallucinations and confusion. Person who wants to get rid of alcohol addiction should not try it at home because he will not be able to face the signs and symptoms without proper medical care and support.

Have you ever heard about alcohol rehab centers? According to recent studies and research these centers have helped lot of people in getting rid of addiction problem. It does not matter to which type of drug person is addicted because the basic steps used in the rehabilitation centers are practically the same. The first essential step is detoxification process. In this step the person goes under special procedures which wash out harmful toxins from the body. The detoxification process is followed by some counseling which can boost the patient’s emotional and mental status.

If you are looking for an alcohol rehab center then there are many things which should be considered. You should always go through the website of the center. The website can give you information about many things. You should always go through the reviews and testimonials provided by the website. You should never opt for a rehab center which do not have experienced and professional staff. Always opt for a program which offers 24 hours emergency care and professional support. You should be very careful while opting a rehab program because the effectiveness of the treatment depends on the quality of the treatment.

Article by Ricardlo Thames

Though many people associate rehab with “hard” drugs such as heroin, meth, and cocaine, alcohol addiction treatment is necessary for alcoholics to become sober. Substance abuse is a neurological disease, and clinical alcohol addiction treatment is the only way to effectively treat alcoholism. The same harmful changes that take place in the brains of drug addicts also occur in the brains of alcoholics.

Like people addicted to illegal drugs, alcoholics must also make sweeping changes to their lifestyles in order to stay sober after rehab. Though addiction itself is not a matter of willpower or choice, alcoholics must make many touch choices to curb drug cravings and avoid their addiction triggers. Here are some of the lifestyle changes people must make after completing alcohol addiction treatment.

Career Changes

Alcohol is a common part of many workplace environments. Businesspeople are often expected to consume alcohol and even get drunk when they network with partners and clients. Headhunters often take their recruits and new hires to bars and other places where excessive alcohol consumption is encouraged. Even relatively “tame” office environments are often host to parties where drunkenness is acceptable. Avoiding these types of environments may require that recovering alcoholics find new jobs.

Another reason why some alcoholics must change their careers is stress. As with other drug addictions, the compulsion to drink is often exacerbated by chronically high stress levels. Work-related stress can also cause people to start drinking in the first place. People who complete alcohol addiction treatment may find it necessary to change careers or relinquish workplace responsibilities in order to bring their stress down to a level they can mange without alcohol.

New Friends

In the United States and most other Western nations, drinking and even drunkenness are socially acceptable and often encouraged. Alcohol is the social drug of choice, and many recovering alcoholics find it difficult to continue associating with old friends while remaining sober.

As painful as it may be, many alcoholics may simply have to find new friends or entirely new social circles. Thankfully, one of the focuses of alcohol addiction treatment programs is the formation of healthy, productive relationships. Addicts often meet new friends while they attend rehab, and they can make new friends and accountability partnerships at support groups within their communities.

Stress Management

Careers are far from the only source of stress for most people – including alcoholics. Since stress is so often the cause of alcoholism and relapse, recovering alcoholics must constantly practice stress management techniques to stay sober.

Rehab clinics teach these techniques during individual counseling sessions. Alcoholics learn the root causes of their addictions, and they use their findings to develop personalized strategies for managing cravings and avoiding triggers.

Reality therapies are also crucial because they help alcoholics connect their newly developed stress management techniques with real-world environments. By cooking, cleaning, shopping, and going about other daily activities during their inpatient treatment programs, alcoholics subconsciously learn to apply their therapies to everyday situations.

If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction, click the links below to find a treatment center near you. Alcoholism is dangerous and even life-threatening, but an alcohol addiction treatment program can help you take back control of your life.

Article by Woodring Moothart

When you are searching for an alcohol and drug rehab program, it is important that you select a facility that will best suit the needs of the person in need of treatment. Whether it’s you, a family member or friend, the most important part of the selection process is ensuring that the facility will be able to offer not only a quality treatment program, but also a professional counseling and support system throughout the entire rehabilitation process.

One of the best ways to find a quality alcohol & drug rehab facility is through the referral of a physician, many of whom will offer a recommendation as to the best treatment options for an individual following a determination as to his/her level of alcohol and/or drug dependency. Without the recommendation of a physician, individuals will have to search for a treatment facility on their own. One way of doing this is by looking through the yellow pages of a local telephone book or searching the web for local treatment facilities.

While each alcohol & drug rehab treatment program is different, the basic fundamentals are the same. Most facilities have a strict list of guidelines that every patient must adhere to including which items can and cannot be brought onto the premises. This is especially true of an inpatient treatment facility, which offers housing to patients. Most programs begin with a detoxification process, often referred to simply as ‘detox,’ which is followed by a treatment program customized to the patient’s needs. During this time, counseling sessions and various activities will be participated in by the patient in order to show them the benefits of living a drug and alcohol free life.

According to their level of dependency, patients may be required to attend an inpatient program. As mentioned previously, this entails the patient actually residing on the property during the treatment process. During this time, there is 24-hour supervision with inpatient care. Outpatient treatment, on the other hand, is for individuals who are able to continue living their life, attending school or work and everyday functions without the concern of substance abuse. An outpatient treatment program allows for an individual to live at home and attend regular counseling meetings, such as AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) or other treatment program. The decision between an inpatient or outpatient treatment program will depend heavily on the level of addiction and the patient’s ability to resist alcohol and drugs without constant supervision.

This article is to be used for informational purposes only. The information contained herein should not be used as, in place of or in conjunction with professional medical advice regarding the treatment for alcohol and drug abuse. Prior to selecting a quality alcohol & drug rehab facility, individuals should consult a licensed medical doctor for a proper diagnosis and recommendation for treatment.

Article by Slavco Stefanoski

If you are suffering from an alcohol addiction, you are not alone. Alcoholism is a word that sometimes has negative social connotations, and just because a person drinks alcohol does not mean that they are an alcoholic. The amount of alcohol consumed varies greatly from person to person that develops alcoholism, and is also affected by genetic predisposition, and social and emotional health. Alcohol by definition is a disease that results from a persistent use of alcohol despite negative personal, emotional, financial, and professional consequences. Heavy alcohol use accompanied by dependence and symptoms of withdrawal, and the inability to recognize that every bad thing has been related to an alcohol addiction. The sometimes uncontrollable urge to drink leads to constant preoccupation with the drug.

According to numerous online sources, the most common substance of abuse resulting in dependence in patients presenting for treatment is alcohol. Overcoming an addiction to anything can be difficult, but there is help and hope available to people who want to stop drinking and get their lives back on track. The mind is more powerful than any drug, and to discover this is to truly be on the road to recovery. Addicts have to make a conscious choice to get and stay sober, one day at a time, and learn how to control the cravings. It’s not something that can be done alone, which is why there are treatment facilities all over the country, most of which are privately owned substance abuse recovery centers. The philosophy of AA or Alcoholics Anonymous has proven to be helpful to many alcoholics in their fight against alcohol addiction, and the program is often used as an adjunct treatment with other therapies, such as in an inpatient setting. AA also encourages communication with a sponsor to help guide the addict through the recovery process, and provide support while working through the program.

Learn more about effects of alcohol as well as alcohol facts and the truth about alcohol addiction. Some online literature discusses at length what drives alcohol addiction, detailing the effects of alcohol and describes some of the research being done to correct drinking problems. Alcohol continues to be the most greatly abused substance despite the wide-spread negative consequences. Even after public outbursts, divorce, loss of employment, revocation of driving privileges, and loss of life and limb, alcoholics continue to drink because it is so highly addicted in people who are predisposed to this disease. If you or someone you know is giving part of their life to alcohol, encourage them to get help. It may take a series of bad events to get the point across, and for many alcoholics, this is what it takes to see their illness in a different light.

Article by Jessica Lakeson

Alcohol addiction treatment helps thousands of alcoholics across the United States make lasting recoveries each year. Although laypeople often still view alcoholism as a matter of willpower, clinical alcohol addiction treatment is required for long-term sobriety. Like every other addiction, alcoholism is a neurological disease.

There are three primary types of treatment plans for alcoholics – inpatient, partial hospitalization, and outpatient. They each have their advantages and disadvantages, and certain programs are better for certain life situations. Here are the details on the different programs offered for alcohol addiction treatment.

Inpatient Treatment

Inpatient rehab programs are designed to quickly produce radical lifestyle changes. They are the most effective way for severely addicted people to become sober, but they also require the most time and effort. Inpatients spend thirty to ninety days living full-time at their treatment facilities, and they receive fifty or more hours of intensive therapies per week.

These therapies primarily include evidence-based treatments such as individual counseling, group discussions, and family therapy. Overall, these therapies are designed to uncover the root causes of alcoholics’ addictions and teach them strategies for coping with future temptations to drink. They also help alcoholics form healthy friendships, repair old friendships, and crate positive home environments. Such long-term strategies are what make alcohol addiction treatment so effective.

Partial Hospitalization

Also called day and night programs, partial hospitalization is a transitional treatment method for alcoholics who have already undergone an inpatient stay. Recovering alcoholics are sometimes not ready to face the challenges and responsibilities of living on their own full-time, so they continue to receive therapies during daytime hours.

In the evenings, they are free to return home under the supervision of clinic staff. They practice clean living and prepare to make their transitions to more independent, sober lives. Although partial hospitalization is less involved than inpatient treatment, participants still receive intensive, evidence-based therapies when they attend their clinics.

Outpatient Treatment

Some alcoholics suffer only short relapses. Others may not have the time to dedicate to an inpatient program. Careers, families, and financial obligations make it impossible for some people to set aside one to three months of their lives to focus on recovery. For these alcoholics, outpatient programs are often the best choice.

Outpatient alcohol addiction treatment involves the same intensive therapies as other programs. However, patients are only required to visit their clinics for a few hours per day. Once they have received treatment, they are free to use the rest of their time as they see fit. Although this level of freedom may not work well for people who are still physically dependent on alcohol, outpatient treatment allows relapsed addicts the opportunity to seek help without disrupting their daily lives.

Alcohol addiction treatment has come a long way over the last several decades. Now that doctors understand the neurological basis of addiction, clinical alcohol addiction treatment centers are able to help thousands of alcoholics achieve lasting sobriety every year.

Unfortunately, a condition called Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome, or PAWS, threatens almost all rehab patients’ recoveries. Setting in immediately after detox, PAWS makes it extremely difficult for addicts to effectively engage their therapies. PAWS can also linger for months or even years, making it difficult for alcoholics to avoid relapse. The following are some of them most common symptoms.

*Continued alcohol cravings

*New cravings for food or other drugs

*Depression, paranoia, and anxiety

*Mood swings

*Constant overreaction or under-reaction to daily situations

*Loss of motor skills

*Short-term memory loss

*Inability to focus

*Exhaustion

*Hypersensitivity to physical pain

Some of these symptoms are the same as those experienced during withdrawal itself. Although PAWS is less severe than withdrawal, the long-term continuation of these kinds of mental, physical, and emotional problems makes it extremely difficult for alcoholics to avoid drinking.

PAWS sufferers often appear to be under the influence, as well. Because of this phenomenon, many recovering alcoholics have been dubbed “dry drunks.” This term has contributed to society’s stigma of alcoholism and is extremely frustrating for people who are struggling to avoid relapse.

A vast majority of recovering alcoholics report at least some of these symptoms. Many medical experts actually believe that all addicts experience PAWS, and that current statistics are inaccurate. Because this condition is so common, alcohol addiction treatment centers have begun makings its PAWS mitigation a top priority in their recovery programs. Here are some of the most effective strategies for dealing with the symptoms.

*Self-Reflection: During individual counseling sessions, alcoholics uncover the causes of their addictions and learn the people, places, and objects which trigger their compulsions to drink. To avoid succumbing to PAWS and relapsing, alcoholics must constantly reflect on their thoughts and behaviors, remember what they learned during treatment. By avoiding the negative thought patterns which lead to drinking, they can avoid temptations before they even occur.

*Purposeful Living: Depression, isolation, and other emotional PAWS symptoms can give alcoholics the impression than clean living is hardly worth the effort. They can avoid such feelings by finding meaning and purpose in their lives. Setting daily goals, making long-term plans, and engaging in spiritual quests for greater meanings in life are crucial.

*Frank Communication: Trusted friends or family members can make an enormous difference in recovering alcoholics’ abilities to overcome PAWS and avoid relapse. These people provide healthy outlets for venting, and they can give gentle but honest feedback about alcoholics’ irrational behaviors.

*Medication: In some cases, rehab clinicians will prescribe medications for dealing with certain PAWS symptoms. These are most effective in cases where alcoholics suffer from depression or other hormonal imbalances.

If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction, click the links below to find a rehab facility near you. Alcoholism is a life-threatening disease, but alcohol addiction treatment can help you get back on your feet.

Clinical alcohol addiction treatment helps thousands of alcoholics make lasting recoveries every year. Breakthroughs in neuroscience and psychology have allowed addiction specialists to develop extremely effective alcohol addiction treatment methods. The effectiveness of these treatments lies in their long-term application.

Even the longest and most intense treatment programs last only three months. Alcoholism is an incurable disease, however, and lasting sobriety takes constant effort. Here are some of the long-term recovery strategies addicts learn during alcohol addiction treatment.

Avoidance

During individual counseling sessions, alcoholics uncover the root causes of their addictions and identify the people, places, and physical objects which trigger their alcohol use. By changing their lifestyles to avoid these triggers, alcoholics can minimize their cravings.

Coping with Cravings

Even addicts who constantly practice avoidance will sometimes experience cravings. This is especially true for alcoholics, since alcohol is legal, socially acceptable, and widely used. Using the strategies they learn during cognitive-behavioral therapy, alcoholics can adjust their attitudes and rationally think through emotionally tough situations involving alcohol.

Healthy Family Lives

A loving, sober home environment is one of the most important aspects of many alcoholics’ long-term recoveries. Most rehab clinics employ family therapy to help alcoholics and their relatives create a healthy family dynamic. It is crucial that all parties involved continue to practice what they learn during these counseling sessions.

Spirituality

Most addicts find comfort and peace of mind by searching for a higher power or greater purpose in life. This doesn’t necessarily have to involve organized religion – spiritual endeavors such as meditation and personal reflection work just as well.

Physical Care

Physical stressors can often exacerbate the emotional problems which lead to relapse. Thankfully, alcoholics can maintain positive, healthy mental states by taking great care of their bodies. Proper nutrition helps to maintain high energy levels and proper hormonal balances. Vigorous exercise also elevates mood through the release of endorphins. In fact, many fitness enthusiasts think of their exercise as a kind of drug-free high.

Making New Friends

One of the most difficult aspects of alcohol addiction treatment is cutting ties with friends who still drink heavily. Because alcohol is such a large part of American culture, this can be even more difficult for alcoholics than for people addicted to illegal drugs.

However, most rehab clinics teach alcoholics strategies for making sober friends and repairing damaged relationships. It is crucial that alcoholics continue to practice these strategies once they leave their clinics. Close human connection is crucial for long-term happiness. Friends also provide addicts a healthy outlet for talking about their problems and receiving honest feedback about their behaviors.

Continued Support

Many alcoholics find that they need therapy for months or even years after their treatment programs are complete. Thankfully, most communities have support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous. These groups help thousands of addicts across the country stay sober by placing members into accountability partnerships. People who may succumb to alcohol cravings on their own can support each other and offer greater confidence and strength in the face of temptation.

If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction, click the links below to find treatment today. Alcoholism is a serious neurological condition, but an alcohol addiction treatment program can help you turn your life around.

Jacob Sullum is a senior editor at Reason magazine and Reason.com and is a nationally syndicated columnist. In this lecture from a Libertarian Party of California event in 2000, Sullum goes beyond utilitarian arguments for repealing drug prohibition, saying that the nature of the act itself — using chemicals to alter one’s mental state — does not justify prohibition. Sullum notes that Americans use other chemical stimulants — alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, and a veritable panoply of other legal substances — to similar ends every day. He also points out that most Americans’ perception of drug addiction is misguided; according to many different sources (including the Drug Enforcement Administration itself) the overwhelming majority of recreational drug users are not addicts. Sullum’s remarks in this video would later be expanded in his 2004 book, Saying Yes: In Defense of Drug Use (www.amazon.com An .mp3 version of this lecture is available for download here: bit.ly

Question by : Are more and more young or not so young females falling victim to addiction?
It seems to me to be the general trend in modern society.
Some facts for your consideration.
More young female smoke tobacco than young males in Britain.
Though more young males drink, young females have a lower toleration of alcohol and thus risk long term side effects from drinking in excess.
Young females catch STDS more easily.
Young females are catching up on young males with a thing called porn addiction. Like all addictions it can take over the sufferers life and stop them relating to the world properly.
Diabetes and other complications from being obese is a growing problem in the female population as their bodies don’t tolerate excess as well as the male body.
Young women of today are expected NOT to outlive the generation before them simply because of the excesses they are encouraged to indulge in.
Food for thought?
I accept that but being from Britain these young women in the future and now even are going to be a hell of a strain on the NHS.

Best answer:

Answer by Colon Conquistador, the Second
yes, falling victim.

Article by Brian Burt 89

There are a lot of people who are either suffering from drug or alcohol addiction. And the number of such people keeps on increasing with every passing day. So people who are looking for any way through which such habits can be curbed then getting admitted to a rehab centre would be the best solution. It is very difficult for an alcoholic to get rid of this habit all by themselves and therefore the need of getting help from an alcohol rehab arises. Alcohol rehabilitation is the first step that an alcoholic should take when he feels that he is in dire need of help. At times the alcoholic himself does not realize the fact that he needs help, in such situations his family members should take a step forward and introduce him to an alcohol rehabilitation centre, so that his treatment can start on time.

If the severity possessed by an alcoholic is quite less, then he can get treated in an alcohol rehab as an outpatient. But if his condition is quite severe then he needs to stay in the alcohol rehab till the moment he does not get well. Depending on a person’s rate of progress, the stay at the alcohol rehabilitation centre can stretch from days to one year. Generally drug rehab is chosen for a person who has undergone tremendous amount of physical as well as psychological damage.

Detoxification is always the first method that is incorporated in a drug rehabilitation programs it is necessary for the body to get rid of all the harmful chemicals. Basically the process of detoxification just requires a couple of days but in some cases it might take a couple of weeks as well. A person who is an inpatient at any of the drug rehabilitation centers needs to live there for a considerable period of time and most of them stay there till they are not completely sure of the fact that they will not go back to drugs. Sometimes if the patient stays at the drug rehab for a very small period of time then the treatment might not be effective as again he has to deal with the pressures of life. Addiction recovery requires the addict to realize that he will be able to handle the pressures of the real world all over again and hence they should be given ample amount of time to strengthen both their physical and emotional self. Addiction recovery can be done in a systematic manner if an addict can prepare himself to get admitted in a drug rehab.

Alcohol addiction treatment helps thousands of alcoholics across the United States make lasting recoveries each year. Although many laypeople still believe alcoholism to be a matter of willpower rather than a disease, it is a neurological condition which requires clinical alcohol addiction treatment. Like other addictions, alcoholism causes permanent changes to sufferers’ brain chemistries and makes them dependent on alcohol for daily activities.

Despite the widespread success of rehab, many people still don’t understand what goes on at treatment clinics. Since alcohol use is so prevalent in American society, communities across the country need to gain a better understanding of the ways rehab specialists treat alcoholism. Here are few of the most important aspects of alcohol addiction treatment.

Most people associate detox with heroin, meth, and other narcotics, but it is an essential step in addiction recovery for anyone who is physically dependent on a substance. By depriving addicts of drugs for one to two weeks, rehab clinicians are able to remove their immediate physical dependencies. Detox doesn’t cure alcoholism – nothing does. However, it does allow alcoholics to manage their cravings enough to productively engage their therapies.

Inpatient, Partial Hospitalization, and Outpatient Programs

These are the three most common treatment plans in rehab clinics, and each one is suited for a specific set of life circumstances. For alcoholics who are seeking help for the first time, inpatient programs are typically the best choice. They require patients to live at their treatment facilities for thirty to ninety days, during which they receive fifty or more hours of intensive therapies per week.

On the other hand, outpatient and partial hospitalization plans involve only a few hours of therapy per day, though the latter sometimes requires full days of treatment. Outpatients are free to spend the rest of their time as they see fit, while partial hospitalization patients must spend their evenings under the supervision of clinic staff. In both cases, patients receive the same evidence-based therapies as people attending inpatient programs.

Personal Discoveries

The main component of alcoholism therapy is one-on-one counseling with an addiction specialist. Alcoholics work to discover the root causes of their addictions – why they started drinking, why they abused alcohol, and how they develop their physical dependencies. They also gain a better understanding of the people, places, and things which trigger their addictions.

Coping Strategies

Since alcoholics will experience at least occasional cravings for the rests of their lives, they must learn to cope with tempting situations. Using what they learn in their counseling sessions, rehab patients develop personalized strategies for dealing with the stressful situations that most often drive them to drink. These strategies are crucial for long-lasting sobriety.

Avoidance Techniques

Alcoholics also learn ways they can avoid cravings altogether. The best way of doing this is to simply avoid their addiction triggers. Avoiding bars, clubs, and other places where alcohol abuse is encouraged is a simple first step. Patients can also practice relaxation techniques which allow them to stay calm in difficult situations and avoid stress-related cravings altogether.

These are a just a few of the proven ways in which alcoholics make progress towards sobriety at rehab facilities.
It is very unlucky to understand that there are many people who look down on alcohol and drug addicts. These people typically think that these addicts are hopeless cases and are scumbags of the universe. For this, they right away think that the best means to get rid of these people is to place them in jail.

However, putting them in jail isn’t at all times the perfect answer. This can be because when they are imprisoned, they really are not going to get any better. In few cases, these people turn to the employ of drugs and alcohol since they are intensely bothered by some issues in their life. Since they’re not strong enough to handle these issues, they turn to the employ of drugs as a temporary escape. Rather than putting them in jail, it’s best to give them alcohol addiction treatment.

Treatment is the most effective option for these people, significantly those who have been brave enough to seek the help of their loved ones. The first step to addiction assist is to admit that they have a trouble and an addiction. In doing thus, they are showing that they actually need to change and stop their addiction. This can be why they need to be properly treated instead of put behind bars.

So as to offer alcohol addiction treatment, the individual should be confined in a highly reliable therapy center. This can be because these centers have been able to help thousands of people handle their addiction problems. When the correct center has been chosen, the individual can be able to recharge himself and find the guidance that he wants for his life. When he comes out from rehab, he will be a fresh man who could be a lot stronger than the last.

Rather than putting addicts in jail, it is best to provide them addiction help. This can be significantly true if they have voluntarily sought the assistance of a expert. After they do this, it solely suggests that that they are prepared to move to a higher step. They have admitted to themselves that they have a problem with drugs or alcohol. The following step will be to treat the problem.

With so many issues affecting people, it is only common why there are some who would fall weak. As a means to build their character, they need to get the help they need from a skilled. By selecting the top rehab center, the concerned individual will be ready to get the addiction help he requires. This will enable him to change for the better and stop relying on his addiction as an escape from reality. When all, these people usually simply need the companion and guidance of another person. Through the rehab facility, they will be ready to get this.

Article by Alba Swanson

Alcohol abuse can be defined as the pattern of alcohol drinking, which results to one or more of these circumstances within a 12-month time frame:

* Drinking in circumstances that result in bodily injuries (e.g. operating machinery)

* Continued drinking despite constant relationship problems which originally resulted from drinking

* Failure in attending to vital duties at home, office/work, or school

* Experiencing chronic alcohol-related legal complications. Good examples are – getting detained for causing damages to somebody’s property, getting a DUI, or being sued for physically injuring someone whilst drunk.

According to experts, you have to take an intelligent approach in dealing with alcohol abuse and its symptoms. Whenever any person experiences complications in any or several of the issues mentioned above, this should be taken as signs of alcohol abuse. To be precise, the sign of any or several of such issues are to be taken as the red flag of someone’s engagement in abusive drinking.

CASA, the research wing at Columbia University runs researches on addiction and substance abuse. In 2005, its research findings included the following:

* American youth who get tied with drinking before turning 15 are 4 times more prone to the risk of turning alcoholics, compared to teenagers not drinking before turning 21. This points out clearly, how alcohol abuse and uptake of alcohol go hand in hand – even when it comes to teenagers.

* Every single day in America, over 13,000 children or teens experience the first drink of their lives. That means, too many of such teens/children are prone to getting tied to alcohol abuse.

* Every single year, around 1,400 college students (who are between 18 and 24 years of age) die from accidents or injuries that are related to alcohol uptakes. This includes motor car accidents. How grim alcohol abuse is for young people is clear from these traffic fatalities.

These alcohol abuse facts are enough to understand the harsh realities that no one can deny.

Question by : Rehab centers for drug & alcohol addiction?
My sister, who is 16. Is addicted to drugs and alcohol but mostly drugs. She doesn’t realize it but I read all the signs and she is one. She’s barely home and when she is she is getting high, when she’s away she’s drinking or doing drugs or both. She’s done weed. E. Shrooms & coke that I know of. She has over dosed twice already. And has been doing drugs and alcohol for a year, since she was 15, she’s turning 17 in Dec. She doesn’t have a job but my mom gives her a 20$ weekly allowance(which I think she shouldnt give to support her habit)Since my mom won’t do anything, I wanna find a rehab center for her, where you don’t need the person addicted concent. I live in Winnipeg Manitoba and would like one where she lives there until she is better. How much will it cost? And what is the number so I can call & ask questions?

Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Jennifer Howser
First off, you need to speak to a professional. A professional will tell you if your sister is really an addict and will tell you what options are available to you. She can most likely get free assistance living in Canada, but it depends where. Unfortunately, you tend to have to pay for the good places, but it’s worth it since it means recovering.

Question by : Can a person drink alcohol after recovery for an unrelated drug additction?
My friend just got out of rehab for Suboxone and crack cocaine abuse about a month ago after checking in voluntarily having realized he needed help (Suboxone was the primary problem, the crack was just a drug he did in tandem with it.) . He’s been really good about staying away from both as well as the people who facilitate his abusive behavior so far. We’ve gone to the bars a few times since or had some beers at my place with no noticeable problems on his end about cravings. However, his father called me and told me I need to stop drinking with him entirely, for good, or he will do his best to separate the two of us; saying that as an addict the alcohol will lead him either back to those drugs or to alcoholism. We’re both 21 and college students so he’s not a minor that can be forcibly controlled by his parents, but in the same right his father is doing what he thinks he needs to to keep his son safe. I am skeptical about whether he really should never drink again, or whether his father is operating under the assumption that my friend is simply unable to control any of his behavior and, in doing so, being overprotective.

His father got the information about it from the former drug user that leads the family IOP meetings he attends having completed his voluntary rehabilitation. Unlike my friend who realized he had a problem before he ruined his life, this guy lost his family, friends, job, etc. and then went to rehab. He got out clean and sober and then relapsed one night after having 3 or so beers. So to me it seems like this person sees every member of his group as a worst case scenario of someone who hit rock bottom. I realize that he is talking from experience, but I also realize that not all drug users are the same, and that not all are so unable to control their impulses; seeing as how my friend has had a few drinks so far with no desire to relapse. However, his father takes every possible piece of advice in any context as applicable to his son’s own situation and demands that he not drink at all and that I refuse to drink with him entirely. Drinking is a bit of a ritual for us in that once or twice a month we get together and have a few beers down town or at one of our houses and just play video games or chat, so to stop entirely is completely possible, but not desirable on either end.

I’m just looking for professional advice or regular opinions on all this:

Is it true that no drug addict should drink after rehabilitation under any circumstances even if alcohol was never a problem for them?

If so, should they refrain from drinking for good or just take time away from it until their life is back in order?

Should I refuse to drink with him at all?

Am I in the wrong for thinking that he can drink without worrying about his former drug addiction?

All responses are greatly appreciated, thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by This is your Captain speaking
1) The reason why it’s said that “No drug addict should drink after rehabilitation under any circumstances even if alcohol was never a problem for them” is because their drug problem is due to an addictive personality; they will just replace the drugs with alcohol to “block” unwanted stuff out, if that’s the case for them.

2) Refrain from drinking, again, they will just replace the drugs with alcohol.

3) Refuse yourself to drink in front of him, help him out, if he can’t drink, why should you? You could also spend “drinking money” on more exciting things, skydiving – I don’t know what you like, he’ll get a better adrenaline rush from that instead of alcohol and drugs and learn that there’s more to life then spending money on drugs.

4) Yes you are in the wrong, yet again, they will just replace the drugs with alcohol.

Alcohol is a drug too, just a legal one only because of the amount of money and Tax it makes. It’s easier to get hold of and cheaper to get hooked to as well.

Recovering from a drug or alcohol addiction takes a lifetime of effort. Recovering addicts must consistently attend therapies, practice self-reflection, and developing new coping mechanisms in order to stay sober for the long term. Unfortunately, most addicts experience a relapse at some point in their recovery. Drug cravings and post acute withdrawal symptoms can be too much for even the most dedicated and disciplined addict to handle.

In some cases, healthcare professionals will actually prescribe new drugs for recovering addicts. Though it can be risky to give drugs to someone who has exhibited addictive behavior patterns, certain pharmaceuticals can be invaluable for maintaining sobriety. Most addicts experience a combination of cravings, depression, physical pain, and social problems post-treatment, and these medicines often allow them to manage their symptoms and make good decisions. Here are some of the most common types of drug addiction medications.

Medications for Opiate Addiction

Opiates such as heroin are some of the most addictive – and most physically dangerous – substances currently abused. Even after a successful detoxification, opiate addicts often experience intense cravings. To combat these cravings and their accompanying mental and physical problems, many doctors actually prescribe other opium derivatives. The most common of these pharmaceutical-grade opiates are methadone and Naltrexone.

These medicines work by altering the way in which heroin affects certain receptor sites in addicts’ brains. Since addiction is a neurological disorder, such medication can be necessary for curbing uncontrollable cravings. However, these opium derivatives also carry risks of their own. Though they tend not to be as addictive as their illicitly-used counterparts, methadone and naltrexone can still be habit-forming. Doctors who prescribe these drugs must carefully monitor their patients to ensure consistent dosages.

Medications for Cocaine Addiction

There are currently no drugs designed specifically to treat cocaine addiction. However, there are still several medicines which have proven effective in this regard. One drug called Gabapentin increases levels of calming neurotransmitters in addicts’ brains. Since people addicted to drugs typically crave the euphoria of dopamine releases, this calming effect can act as a substitute and reduce cravings to manageable levels.

Two other medications cocaine addicts sometimes use are n-acetylcysteine and nocaine. N-acteylcysteine can actually repair brain cell damage caused by heavy cocaine use. It is also available over the counter and is less habit-forming than most illicit drugs. Nocaine is a drug scientists are still testing that appears to weakly mimic the effects of cocaine. It doesn’t have the same stimulant effects, so it may prove helpful for weaning some patients off of cocaine without disrupting their lives with intense detox and drug treatment.

Medications for Alcoholism

The first substance the Federal Drug Administration approved for treating alcoholism was disulfiram. This medicine helps some alcoholics fight their cravings by upsetting the gastrointestinal system when combined with alcohol. Addicts who consistently take disulfiram may simply avoid alcohol consumption because of the combination’s resultant nausea and vomiting. People addicted to alcohol may also use acamprosate – a drug which can help reduce depression, aggression, and other psychological post acute withdrawal symptoms.

These medications may be effective in treating addictions, but they cannot replace a holistic treatment program at a rehabilitation clinic.
