Jgarr pretty much hit it, Americans want pot to keep its stigma that having it illegal gives it.

Pot is not harmless. How many car accidents? Well I know of one, that killed a friend when a guy high on pot, not drunk, ran a red light and killed him.

Alcohol has been put in plenty of medical remedies. I am fine with pot medicinally.

You must not know many potheads if you think it is not addictive.

Pot is scientifically proven to be a toxic substance. What have you been smoking to not know that????

The reason it is illegal is because the majority want it to be illegal for non medicinal uses. I will vote every single time to keep it illegal with the exception of a REAL medical reason. I know first hand what harm pot smoking can do. I dont want it to be a readily available and an acceptable substance in the society I live in and my kids are growing up in and so I will vote to keep it illegal.
When you make something legal you make it more acceptable. I dont want drug use, and pot is a drug, to be acceptable.

I do think, however, it should be a state voter issue, just like alcohol and tobacco should be.
It is not a federal right to smoke, drink or do drugs and so it should be up to the states.

It has to do with hemp and some sort of competition with rope companies. The hemp growers where scandalized with bad propaganda. The public were convinced and laws were passed. As late as the 50`s false attributions were given to pot smoking. A movie was made that made claims of pot making people crazy and violent and nothing could be further from the truth.

Weed will affect your brain. Don't try to justify it. I have seen many of accidents at my job when someone was stoned just as if they were drunk. It slows motor functions and response time just as alcohol. I know this as I have smoked many of times. But we all grow up at some time. If you are at home all day, go for it.

Alcohol is actually beneficial for the body in small doses.

You can get lung cancer from large amounts of CO2 (more so then even cigarettes) contained in marijuana smoke . You can also develop some mental problems from long-term use like memory loss and psychosis.

1-4) Prohibition. Look it up.

This is a case of "Been there, done that"

Anyways, why are you targeting AMERICANS? Where does wine come from, again? Oh that's right, the refined genteel of EUROPE.

Not that alcoholism isn't a problem in the US, but if you're gonna point fingers at least point it to the right people?

"During Prohibition, the manufacture, transportation, import, export, and sale of alcoholic beverages were restricted or illegal. Prohibition was supposed to lower crime and corruption, reduce social problems, lower taxes needed to support prisons and poorhouses, and improve health and hygiene in America. Instead, Alcohol became more dangerous to consume; organized crime blossomed; courts and prisons systems became overloaded; and endemic corruption of police and public officials occurred. "
