Question by Greg C: Alcohol rehab without health insurance?
My friend needs to go into rehab for an alcohol addiction. Unfortunately, he recently lost his job (doesn’t get Cobra; not sure what the deal is with that) and his health insurance will soon be terminated, I think at the end of this week. What are his options, aside from shelling out five figures?

Oh, and it’s important to note that he’s never really in a crisis situation, like where he has to go to the ER to get his stomach pumped… he just drinks heavily throughout the day when left to his own devices. He’s agreed he needs help, but the health insurance thing is getting in the way.

thanks for advice.

Best answer:

Answer by Artemisc
I had the same situation with a friend. I called the county alcohol abuse hot line, they hooked me up with a facility that would charge it to the state. They had a bed available and he went in that night. Granted, it was only for 7 days but it had a positive effect, and didn’t cost him anything.

One thing to keep in mind, if he isn’t ready, they don’t push it. It won’t work unless he wants to do it.

Alcohol is used as a celebratory gesture in just about every culture across the globe. It’s used for New Years, Christmas, birthdays, weddings, graduations, bar mitzvahs, and to commemorate just about any special occasion. In America, it’s almost like an earned rite of passage, where the elders hand the younger partygoers a sip…ah…and then it’s love at first sip.

It’s no wonder alcoholism runs in families. Few people actually wait until the legal drinking age of 21 to drink. Sometimes, adolescents take up drinking so early on, that by the time they’ve reached actual drinking age, they’ve become full-blown alcoholics.

These young adults go onto college where it’s considered socially acceptable to get hammered every weekend, and for the “week night warriors,” even close out the bars on a Monday or Tuesday night! After graduation, it continues into the workforce…and it never stops.

Or if it does, it’s already too late, as the Effects of Alcoholism have already manifested in the body, causing liver problems, a suppressed immune system, high blood pressure, heart and respiratory problems, and even brain damage. If that isn’t enough to steer you clear of that weekly drinking binge, perhaps these facts will:

1) Around 76 million people worldwide suffer from some type of alcohol-related disorders including excessive drinking and alcoholism.

2) Alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing certain cancers including lip, tongue, throat, esophagus, liver, and breast cancer. These types of cancers aren’t just related to alcoholism – even three drinks a day can cause these cancers, according to the American Cancer Society.

3) Alcohol abuse cost the United States an estimated 0-billion in 2005, more than cancer (6-billion) and obesity (3-billion)

4) People who begin drinking as teenagers are four times more likely to develop alcohol-related disorders than those who wait until age 21 to consume their first drink.

5) According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2008, 11,773 people in the U.S. died in drunk-driving accidents. Every 45 minutes, someone is killed in an alcohol-impaired driving collision.

6) Four people under the age of 21 die each day because of alcohol-related traffic incidents.

7) Children with alcoholic parents are up to 10 times more likely to abuse alcohol themselves.

According to suicide statistics, 15-20% of suicides involve alcohol

9) ‘Binge drinking’ is defined as drinking five or more drinks at one time. Long term binge-drinking are known to cause liver disease, cancer, pancreatitis, and heart disease. These binge-drinking sessions don’t need to be weekly either. Even irregular heavy drinking can cause these diseases.

10) In 2007 one-fifth of adults (20%) ages 18-25 were classified as needing Alcohol Abuse and Addiction Treatment and Drug Abuse Treatment – that’s an estimated 6.9 million people!

While these facts are alarming, it’s important to know that there are programs out there, all across the nation that can help people get sober and defeat their alcohol addictions before it’s too late. Alcohol Abuse Recovery can be a long, difficult road, but it’s worth it when a person no longer seeks alcohol to fill a void in their lives – that much-sought-after happiness will come from within.

I read this article and it helped me learn what are the ways that fasting can improve someones health. Also on tv the sheik advises anyone with any health problem like high blood pressure ,diabetes, cholestrol to fast even during the fitr days .

 1. Attitude About Juice Fasting: One key to juice fasting over water fasting is the ability to prevent ketosis (disrupted carbohydrate metabolism in response to chronic starvation) by continuously providing simple carbohydrates that are used by your body for energy and nutrition to the cells. Some individuals, however, believe that carb overload is the reason why Americans are fat.
2. Attitude about Skipping Meals: One study suggests that skipping a meal occasionally is not all that bad, especially if weight loss is a goal. However, be aware of changes in metabolic rate (see below).
3. Autonomic Nervous System: According to this article, fasting appears to have a normalizing effect on the overall tone of the autonomic nervous system. This normalization decreases possibilities for a number of issues ranging from digestive disturbances to anxiety disorders.
4. Awareness: Fasting can heighten awareness, depending upon the health of the individual, the goal for fasting and the ability to eliminate toxins from the system.
5. Back Pain: Back pains caused by muscular tightness and stress rather than from bone disease or osteoporosis may be alleviated with a lighter diet or juice fasting.
6. Bad Health Habits: In some people, fasting has helped break cravings for alcohol, tobacco, caffeine and some drug addictions.
7. Blood Pressure: Water fasting may correct your high blood pressure to a safe range within two weeks without drugs. This level of pressure can be maintained if the diet is changed rather than going back to old eating habits. This study was conducted in a controlled setting.
8. Cell Proliferation: This study, done on mice, showed that intermittent fasting slowed cell production, which also showed cancer development. Slowing down the rate of cell proliferation essentially buys time for the cells to repair genetic damage that may cause cancer.
9. Cholesterol: One study about a 30-day Muslim fast showed significant decrease in LDL (”bad” cholesterol), total serum cholesterol and serum triglycerides at the end of the fasting period. There also was a significant increase in “good” cholesterol (HDL) that showed at the end of the fast and continued to show for one month after the fast.
10. Chronic cardiovascular disease and congestive heart failure: Fasting can reduce triglycerides, atheromas, total cholesterol and may increase HDL levels.
11. Energy Flow: Through this logic, fasting enables the body to slow down to the point where the individual can listen to the body through the mind. This ‘vital force’ is clouded when the body is filled with toxins. However, one study with flies showed that the value of diminished appetite to an animal’s survival may vary with the infecting microbe.
12. Fat Mobilization [PDF]: Fasting may move the body to mobilize fat stores from adipose tissue (the fat under your skin) to consume that fat as energy. Short fasts also may protect proteins in your body with the release of a growth hormone.
13. Heart Health: The day-long, once-a-month fast many Mormons undertake as a part of their faith may help explain the lower rates of coronary artery disease in this population, according to a study presented at the American Heart Assn.’s scientific sessions in Orlando, Florida, in 2007.
14. Homeostasis: Basically, your metabolic equilibrium, or ability to heal, could undergo a change during fasting. When fasting is employed as a therapeutic measure, it changes the playing field for disease and infection. This article quotes Louis Pasteur, “The pathogen is nothing, the terrain is everything” for an argument on why fasting can be used as a cure for injury or disease.
15. Insulin and Blood Sugars: A study from the National Institute on Aging found that skipping meals frequently can help mice maintain healthier glucose and insulin levels. The study provides insight into the possible effect of fasting on glucose metabolism.
16. Life Span: The point behind this list of articles and studies is that caloric reduction, overall, is one way to increase a life span. Lower metabolic rates, slower cell proliferation and less body fat that holds toxic matter all lead to a healthier life. This translates, for many people, into a longer life.
17. Lifestyle: If you want to change your life to feel healthier and more productive, this author believes that fasting provides the pivot for that change.
18. Mental Alertness: When toxins are removed from the lymphatic and blood systems, this change improves mental clarity. Eating less also results in energy conservation, which can be used by the brain for thinking tasks.
19. Metabolism: While many people believe that a fast metabolism is key to weight loss,

When you see someone in the street drinking something out of a brown paper bag, you automatically assume that they are drinking alcohol, although it is difficult to pin point back to when it actually took off. We can though confirm that the ideology of alcoholism dates back to 1849 when Magnus Huss first linked the consumption of alcohol to serious health conditions.

Willpower is essentially the same as not using any technique at all, but only relying on one’s own willpower to avoid picking up another drink. Now this idea has been tested a million times over by virtually every alcoholic who has tried to beat the problem of drink, and the consensus is that it is never a sustainable method for anyone.

The first part, the early alcoholism stages, involved someone needing alcohol more and more. At this point, they can still stop drinking if they want, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult, and they are starting to use it more and more as a stress reducer, perhaps after a long day at work or dealing with a stressful situation. Even if you think you are still here, you need to get help before it progresses to something far worse, which it will if left unattended to. At this point, it’s more or les a means to help you forget about your problems at least for he time being, which is really the only benefit that alcoholism has.

Drug and alcohol interventions are very effective if done the proper way. Having the family willing to do this is the most important and always the first step. Once the family realizes this problem can not go on the intervention company is the next step. The intervention coordinator will then go over what steps need to be taken to have the most effective intervention as possible. Once everyone is on the same page the interventionist will fly out to meet with the family.

Alternative alcoholism and addiction treatments are also becoming more popular. Alternative alcoholism treatments and the like definitely have a role to play – but I still think they should be used alongside a more traditional approach first – because there is so much to gain from the professionals who help you in a place like rehab.

There are many methods available to help you stop alcohol consumption but these treatments work at the conscious level only. The best treatment for alcohol addiction will be hypnosis; hypnosis will not only help you in stop alcohol addiction at a conscious level but also at an unconscious level. There are many smp3 on the Internet regarding alcohol addiction. You should undergo all the sessions of the treatment and start living a new life where you can be a social drinker or best of all a non-drinker.

Hypnosis treatment helps deal with the problem at grass roots levels and as such your chances of falling prey to addiction yet again are negligible. Hypnosis can help you start on a new path in life and soon you’ll be on your way to recovery without having to waste your precious time, and above all life to this life threatening addiction.
