I read an article about Dr. Drew Penski and he is a behavioral psychologist and an addiction specialist.

They’re generally psychologists who specialize in the areas of substance abuse and rehabilitation. If you’re having problems with addiction though, it’s usually best to start with some kind of treatment program (either inpatient [you stay at the center] or outpatient [you go in a couple times a week for an hour or so of group/individual therapy]), and they also will have referrals to some local doctors.
Those treatment programs are anything like AA, since they are run by licensed personnel as opposed to just being a group conscience. Although many of the programs do encourage a program like AA in addition to everything else.
